You can create labels that store your emails. Add as many labels as you want to an email.

Note: Labels are different from folders. If you delete a message, it will be erased from every label that it’s attached to and your entire inbox.

Add a label to a message

Add a label to multiple messages in your inbox

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (3).
  2. To the left of a message, touch and hold the letter or photo.
  3. touch and hold any other messages you want to add labels to.
  4. In the top right, tap More Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (4).
  5. Tap Change labels.
  6. Add or remove labels.
  7. Tap OK.

Move a message to another label

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (5).
  2. Open the email you want to move, or select it in your inbox.
  3. Tap More Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (6) Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (7)Move to.
  4. Choose the label you want to move the email to.

Tip: You can change your Gmail settings to quickly take this action by swiping left or right on messages in your messages list.

  1. On a computer, open Gmail. You can't create labels from the Gmail app.
  2. On the left, click More.
  3. Click Create new label.
  4. Name your label.
  5. Click Create.

Edit a label

  1. On a computer, open Gmail. You can't edit labels from the Gmail app.
  2. On the left side of the page, hover your cursor over your label's name.
  3. Click the Down arrow Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (9).
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Make changes to your label.
  6. Click Save.

Delete a label

  1. On a computer, open Gmail. You can't edit labels from the Gmail app.
  2. On the left side of the page, hover your cursor over your label's name.
  3. Click the Down arrow Create labels to organize Gmail - Android (10).
  4. Click Remove label.
