What is crypto seed?
Definition. A recovery phrase (sometimes known as a seed phrase) is a series of words generated by your cryptocurrency wallet that gives you access to the crypto associated with that wallet. Think of a wallet as being similar to a password manager for crypto, and the recovery phrase as being like the master password.
A simplified explanation of how seed phrases work is that the wallet software has a list of words taken from a dictionary, with each word assigned to a number. The seed phrase can be converted to a number which is used as the seed integer to a deterministic wallet that generates all the key pairs used in the wallet.
Hodlinox plates are metal plates on which you can engrave the seed phrase to your bitcoin wallet. The plates are made from extra thick stainless steel and can be locked together with a tamper-evident security seal.
Coinbase Wallet generates a 12-word recovery phrase, also referred to as a "seed," that you and only you have access to. This means that if you lose your recovery phrase, you will lose access to your Coinbase Wallet.

How do I get my seed phrase from Coinbase?
We don't currently have a way to generate a new seed phrase within Coinbase Commerce. Once your funds are in a secure location, we recommend opening a new Coinbase Commerce account, and either recreating relevant Checkouts or reintegrating this new account with an eCommerce platform.

Coinbase.com stores your crypto for you after you buy it. You do not need a Coinbase.com account to use Coinbase Wallet. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet. The private keys (that represent ownership of the crypto) are stored directly on your device and not within a centralized exchange like Coinbase.com.

A 2017 report from Chainalysis, a forensics company, estimated that between 2.78 million and 3.79 million bitcoins have been lost. That's out of a total of nearly 19 million circulating today, and a maximum supply of 21 million tokens when Bitcoin is fully mined.
How can I lose all my bitcoin?
When you keep your crypto in a centralized exchange, you don't really have any control over it. If the exchange gets hacked or its owners vanish, you lose all your crypto! So always store your crypto in your own wallets – paper, hardware, or software.
There is no way to recover bitcoin that is truly lost. Some mistaken transactions have been refunded, but only when the counterparty personally knows the sender, which is infrequent. If a private key is lost, then bitcoin belonging to that key is unspendable.
