What happens when your margin is 0?
A margin call happens when your free margin falls to zero, and all you have left in your trading account is your used, or required margin. When this happens, your broker will automatically close all open positions at current market rates.
Free Margin is the money that is NOT “locked up” due to an open position and can be used to open new positions. When Free Margin is at zero or less, additional positions cannot be opened.
If you do not meet the margin call, your brokerage firm can close out any open positions in order to bring the account back up to the minimum value. This is known as a forced sale or liquidation. Your brokerage firm can do this without your approval and can choose which position(s) to liquidate.
If the Margin Level is 100% or less, most trading platforms will not allow you to open new trades. In the example, since your current Margin Level is 250%, which is way above 100%, you'll still be able to open new trades.
"Not enough money" means that there is not enough margin on your account to open a position of the desired volume.
Therefore, when the margin level comes below 50%, your broker will start an activity called a “stop out”. At this point, a broker will close/liquidate the most unprofitable positions that are damaging the overall account most. This process will last until the margin level is back at least above the stop out level.
How does the Margin Level of a trading account fall or rise? If your open positions don't work out and you make losses, your Account Equity will fall - and along with it the Margin Level. If you make a profit, this will top up your balance and your Margin Level will rise.
What Is Margin Level in Forex? Brokers use margin level to determine whether Forex traders can take any new positions or not. A margin level of 0% means that the account currently has no open positions. A Forex margin level of 100% implies that account equity is equal to used margin.
Keep a healthy amount of free margin on the account in order to stay in trades. At DailyFX, we recommend using no more than 1% of the account equity towards any single trade and no more than 5% equity on all trades at any point in time.
Many margin investors are familiar with the "routine" margin call, where the broker asks for additional funds when the equity in the customer's account declines below certain required levels. Normally, the broker will allow from two to five days to meet the call.
Does Margin Call affect credit score?
A margin call won't hurt your credit because you will ultimately end up making a timely payment, either through depositing money or liquidation.
You can keep your loan as long as you want, provided you fulfill your obligations such as paying interest on time on the borrowed funds. When you sell the stock in a margin account, the proceeds go to your broker against the repayment of the loan until it is fully paid.
It is worth paying attention that if a free margin becomes negative, and then any pending orders will not be executed.
If your cash balance is negative (in parenthesis), then that means your account is on margin and borrowing money. In the example below, this account is margining $16,991.67 in stock. Accounts on margin are assessed interest daily (including weekends) and are charged monthly (mid-month).
- Monitor margin level at all times.
- Add more funds to increase your equity level.
- Closeout position(s)
- Don't over-leverage.
- Avoid trading market gaps.

So in margin: 0 auto, the top/bottom margin is 0, and the left/right margin is auto, Where auto means that the left and right margin are automatically set by the browser based on the container, to make element centered.
There is no space between the inner (content) box and the outer (border) box so there is zero padding. Margin is just the space outside the border. This is important for how you want your element to appear when other elements are nearby.
