Planning Self-Control Focus

Planning

Developing a systematic approach for setting and achieving goals.

TwoDots - Educational App Review (1)To succeed in TwoDots, players must consider the effect of each move before taking their turn. The point of the game is to eliminate dots. The best way to eliminate dots is to connect a square of same colored dots. Once a square is connected, all dots of that color are eliminated from the entire screen. This move allots players more points, and makes it easier to connect other colors or eliminate blockades in future moves. Connecting a square of dots is a skill that takes foresight. Like Tetris dots fall down one notch on the gridded screen each time a row is eliminated. So players must take this in account when choosing which colored dots to connect. They must anticipate the way which the dots will fall, and try and force them to make a square. In some of the harder levels, players are thinking three to four moves in advance.

Self-Control

Managing our actions, feelings and behaviors.

TwoDots - Educational App Review (2)It may be enticing when players see a couple of red, yellow, or purple dots in horizontal or vertical line. But before connected the first set of corresponding colors that they come across, players must calculate the outcome of each move and determine which play will put them in the best position to get three stars. It’s not a game that won a whim. While there is some luck involved, as the dots are mostly randomized, TwoDots is a game that’s won with skill. And impulsive play does now give players a good chance at winning. Players must take the time to think things through, considering all possible outcomes, before choosing their next course of action.

Focus

Getting started and then maintaining attention and effort to tasks.

An important aspect of the focus thinking skill is goal directed persistence. TwoDots helps players develop an affinity for this skill set. The ability to see a goal or objective through from start to finish is the essence of goal directed persistence. And since the game objectives often change, it’s important for players to direct their attention to the end goal, whether it’s connecting 20 green dots, sinking 10 anchors, or breaking 15 blocks of ice. While gameplay always revolves around connecting and eliminated dots, the changing objectives keep things interesting. This is where players really need to concentrate.
