Ryder Cup format: Breaking down fourball, foursomes and scoring for non-golf fans (2024)

Adam Woodard|USA TODAY

If The Masters is a tradition unlike any other, the Ryder Cup is a tournament unlike any other.

Every two years, 12 of the best players from the United States square off against 12 of the best from Europe in an event that has become must-see TV.

Unlike most golf tournaments, instead of four days of play, the Ryder Cup is three: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Another unique feature of the tournament is the format itself, and for non-golfers it can be a little confusing.

Friday and Saturday both have a morning and afternoon session. Fourball is played during the morning sessions, while foursomes are played in the afternoon. Sunday’s matches are straight-up match play.

In fourballs, each captain picks four teams of two. Both players on each team play their own ball, so four balls are in play every hole. Each team takes the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team with the lowest score per hole wins that hole. If the scores are tied, the hole is halved.

Foursome matches are where it gets to be a little confusing. Captains pick four teams of two again, but the instead of each player playing his own ball, each two-man team plays one ball per hole, and players take turns hitting until the hole is complete. In other words: alternate shot.

An important fact to note is that the alternating resets on each tee: one player is designated to tee off on odd-numbered holes, while the other begins the even-numbered holes. Just like fourballs, the team with the lowest score on each hole wins, and a tie means the hole is halved.

Sunday features all 12 players playing head-to-head in match play. Lowest score per hole wins, tied holes are halved.

Points are awarded for every match won. With eight matches on Friday and Saturday and 12 on Sunday, a total of 28 points are awarded. The first team to reach 14.5 points wins the Ryder Cup.

In the event of a 14-14 draw, the team who previously won retains the cup. For example, if this year’s tournament were to end in a tie, the United States would retain the cup after winning in 2016.

Simple enough, right?

The tournament begins with Friday's morning session at 2 a.m. ET (8 a.m. local) and continues with the afternoon session at 7:45 a.m. ET (1:45 p.m. local). Golf Channel and NBC will carry the coverage live, and a stream is available at RyderCup.com.
