How to select ceiling medallion size? ›

“Measure the length and width of your room in feet. Multiple the length and the width, then divide by 7. This will give you the proportionate medallion size in inches. For instance… a 10‐by‐14 foot room calculation would be: 10 feet x 14 feet = 140 square feet divided by 7 = 20 inches diameter.

Ceiling medallions are generally intended for rooms with high ceilings. A good rule of thumb is that the higher the ceiling, the larger the medallion should be. So a really tall two-story ceiling will require a large medallion, unless its dimensions for length and width are small.

You want the medallion to be the same size or larger than your lighting fixture for larger rooms but for a smaller room the diameter should be smaller than the light fixture. Decide on a style preference, traditional or contemporary.

Traditionally, artisans made ceiling medallions from paper mache, plaster or wood. Now, we make our medallions using polyurethane, a resilient material created for the modern age.

Adhesive. You can use any adhesive that is rated for use with polyurethane (check the back of the label) -- we have had great success using Red Devil Construction Adhesive, LoctitePowergrab and PL Premium Polyurethane Adhesive, all of which work well and are readily available at most home improvement stores.

Apply polyurethane-based construction adhesive to the back of the ceiling medallion. We used Fast Set Polyurethane Construction Adhesive from Titebond. Center the medallion over the electrical box, and press it against the ceiling. Pull the medallion slight off the ceiling to allow air into the adhesive.

Run a bead of caulk all the way around the perimeter of the medallion and position it on the ceiling. The caulk will hold it in place until you're ready to permanently secure the ceiling medallion.

Since ceiling medallions have been an ornamental item for the home since the 19th century, they are not about to go away any time soon! They add architectural interest and decorative detail to the ceiling, which is sometimes overlooked, and enhance the light fixture installed below it.

Pick a paint color that complements your room's color scheme. For a cohesive look, match the wall trim or ceiling color. Contrasting colors can make the medallion pop as an accent.

Should a ceiling medallion match the ceiling or the light fixture? ›

The light fixture will be the main focal point in the room, so the ceiling medallion must match it. You can choose a ceiling medallion larger or smaller than the lighting, but room size is still important. Smaller rooms will not typically have larger light fixtures.

Obviously ceiling medallions can be used with pendant lighting, chandeliers, and even semi flush mounts… really any type of “hanging” light fixture. I personally love the juxtaposition of an ornate or traditional ceiling medallion paired with a modern light.

To find an ideal height for a pendant, take the room's height, then multiply it by 2.5 and 3, which will give you 2 numbers. (For example, if your room has a 10-foot ceiling, you will get 25 and 30.) Those two numbers are a good range for pendant heights.

Generally, pendant lights tend to hang from between 12-20″/ 30-51cm below a standard 8ft/ 2.4m ceiling, obviously also taking into account the above points. Another way to think about this is ensuring there's at least a 7ft/ 2.1m clearance between the floor and the bottom of your pendant.
