The Iranian calendar is a solar calendar which begins on the first day of spring and ends on the last day of winter. Hence, the first three months correspond exactly with spring, the second three months with summer, the third three months with autumn, and the last three months with winter. The first six months are 31 days each; the next five months are 30 days each; the last month, Esfand, is 29 days (30 days, every four years) سال کبیسه sāl-e kabise ‘leap year.’ The first day of the year (Farvardin 1) is called Nowruz (literally New Day). The Iranian New Year holiday is celebrated from Farvardin 1 to Farvardin 13.
The Islamic lunar calendar is also used in Iran for religious observances. The Western calendar is generally used for international purposes. A typical printed calendar in Iran shows the Iranian calendar accompanied by corresponding Islamic lunar and Western calendars.
