Are magnetic Canadian pennies worth anything? ›

If you discover a 2006 magnetic, no P, no logo specimen in your penny jar, you might get $50 for it. But the real prize is for uncirculated coins – factory fresh, mint condition. And on eBay, one of the uncirculated pennies recently sold for $500, uncertified.

Nickel and ferrous materials (such as steel) are magnetic. Thus, most Canadian coins with a P (plated on steel blanks) and RCM (Royal Canadian Mint) mintmarks are picked up by the magnet. On the other hand, American coins do not have a ferrous content.

Canadian coins are made primarily of steel, which is a ferromagnetic metal. This means these coins will become magnetized when placed near a strong permanent magnet, and attract the magnet.

The 1911 Canadian silver dollar held the record of the world's most valuable coin. Only two Canadian silver dollars were struck, and one is housed at the Canadian Currency Museum in Ottawa. This leaves only one 1911 Canadian silver dollar available to collectors.
