How to Get Netflix for Free — Legally! (2024)

There are a ton of streaming services out there, but the OG is still one of the most popular: Netflix. They offer a wide range of movies, TV shows, and documentaries, making it a popular source of entertainment for many households. However, with a monthly subscription cost, it can add up to a significant expense over time. But the good news is that you can get Netflix for free.

You don’t have many options to get free Netflix, but some definitely exist. (There are many more options for saving money on Netflix.) We’ll show you the common promotions and discounts that’ll knock this line item off your budget.

So get ready to watch Wednesday, Stranger Things, and Harry & Meghan without burdening your bank account. Here’s what we’ve learned:

How to Get Netflix for Free — Legally! (1)

Get Netflix for free if you’re a T-Mobile subscriber.

Did you know that T-Mobile offers a free Netflix subscription with their Magenta and Magenta Max plans? It’s true! If you’re already a T-Mobile customer with one of these plans, you can simply go to your “Add-Ons” page on your T-Mobile profile to get started with your free Netflix account.

If you’re on the Magenta plan, you’ll get the basic Netflix subscription, and if you have the Magenta Max plan, you’ll get the standard Netflix subscription.

In the United States, Comcast Xfinity customers can opt for a package that includes a Netflix subscription. After signing up, they can activate the package by linking their Netflix account, whether it’s new or already existing.

Buy a discounted Netflix gift card at Target.

Target sells lots of gift cards, and if you have the Target RedCard (branded debit card), you get a 5% discount on everything they sell — including those gift cards.

If you get an ad-supported Netflix account ($6.99/month) — your gift card will pay for 14 months of your account, but since you only paid $95 for $100 in credit, it’s like getting that 14th month free.

Online gift card reseller Raise.com also keeps an inventory of Netflix gift cards, but the best discount we saw was 4.8% discount.

Note: Netflix promo codes aren’t really a thing … if you go to a website that claims to have them, chances are they’re bogus.

Netflix employees get free Netflix — among other perks.

If you’re looking for a new job, you might wanna know that Netflix employees receive some great benefits, including a free Netflix subscription. This is according to employee reviews on Glassdoor, where Netflix has a 4.4/5 star rating.

Along with the free subscription, employees also have access to a range of standard benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as life insurance and various other types of insurance. Check out their listings.

Also: Some companies, such as Google and LinkedIn, have offered a free Netflix subscription to their employees as a way to enhance their benefits package. And some financial services firms, such as Capital One, have offered a free Netflix subscription as a reward for their credit card customers.

Ask to be added to a friend or family member’s Netflix account (for now).

Most Netflix subscriptions allow multiple users, and those users can stream different things at the same time. So if you know someone who has an account and you ask really nicely, maybe they’ll add you to their account as one of the approved secondary users.

It works best if you live in the same household, or if you visit the primary account holder’s residence at least once every 31 days. That’s because Netflix is cracking down on account-sharing and will begin charging a fee ($8/month) for users who aren’t in the same building.

Note: If you’re a student, you might be hoping for a Netflix student discount. Sadly, they don’t exist … but there is a Paramount Plus student discount.

Sadly, there are no Netflix free trials anymore.

Netflix no longer offers free trials for new users. Previously, Netflix offered a free trial period for new subscribers, allowing them to try the service for a limited time — sometimes up to a month! — without being charged. However, the company has discontinued this promotion and now requires new users to start a paid subscription to access the service.

This change was made as part of Netflix’s efforts to simplify their pricing and sign-up process. Don’t worry, though; there are plenty of streaming services offering free access and trials.

Note: There’s no free trial for Netflix DVD anymore, either. It used to be a whole month long.
