Depending on the shade, blue wristbands represent a variety of causes. Reflex blue signifies support for diabetes, anti-bullying, and Parkinson's disease; light blue denotes prostate cancer and men's health; cornflower blue represents esophageal and stomach cancer; navy blue is symbolic of colon cancer and arthritis.

Color-coded wristbands are often used as part of multi-component approaches to patient safety. Many hospitals use the color scheme recommended by the American Hospital Association (AHA): red for allergy, yellow for elevated fall risk, and purple for DNR status¹.

Red for patient allergies. Yellow for patients at risk of falling. Purple for do-not-resuscitate patient preferences. Green for latex allergies. Pink for restricted extremity use.

Some of the most common jelly bracelet color codes are: Yellow – hugging. Purple – kissing. Red – lap dance.

Green awareness Wristbands

The color green is sometimes associated with different types of depression & bipolar disorder. Gray is also used for awareness of mental health illnesses. Green signifies certain disabilities and disorders such as cerebral palsy, Tourette syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, and gastroparesis.

RED - heart disease, stroke, DARE/substance abuse, AIDS, MADD. MAROON - multiple myeloma, sickle cell disease, brain aneurysm. ORANGE - kidney & leukemia cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, ASPCA, motorcycle safety, world hunger, self harm awareness. YELLOW - sarcoma & bone cancer, support our troops/POWs/MIA, suicide.

Purple to denote a patient's "Do Not Resuscitate" (DNR) status.

Black wristbands display mourning and advocate sleep disorders. They're also used in conjunction with white wristbands to promote Black Lives Matter. Black bracelets may also represent prisoners of war, 9/11, gang prevention, skin cancer research or counter-culture movements.

Pink hospital wristbands: A pink wristband indicates the patient has a restricted limb or an extremity that should be handled with care. The idea here is to avoid medical procedures such as taking blood pressure, drawing blood or starting an IV in an area that can potentially result in harm or injury to the patient.

Many black advocacy groups, such as Black Lives Matter, use black silicone bracelets to raise funds for their cause. Black wristbands are used both within and outside the black community to show support for the community and to advocate for equal rights and treatment.

White or Clear Wristbands

White silicone bracelets, made popular by the “Make Poverty History” campaign, frequently stand for social causes. A white wristband is used to indicate lung cancer. In addition, they stand for religious convictions and peace, but they are also connected to blindness and bone cancer.

Red: passion, good luck, adventure. Orange: happiness, joy, excitement. Yellow: friendliness, optimism, creativity. Green: hope, nature, compassion.

The color selected is a matter of personal choice or based on the color for another cause, although black is usually for someone who has passed away, and pink is often associated with someone fighting or lost due to breast cancer.

Mourning. Black is often the color of mourning and grief. Many people use black wristbands to show that they are grieving by wearing a bracelet that has the name of the person being mourned debossed into the band. The other use is fundraising.

Orange hospital bands can signify many situations… depending upon the hospital. In many hospitals, an orange band on the patient's wrist is a clear warning to hospital personnel they are encountering a patient who is verbally or physically combative. Yet, that is NOT the only significance of the color orange.
