300W PSU - getting newer graphics card with similar TDP but more pins? (7) HP Recommended

Product: Pavillion Power 580-131

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HELLO FRIENDS

My prebuilt PC contains a 300W PSU and an RX 580 4gb. The card is powered by 6-pin PSU connector, but it appears I also have an extra 2+6 pins available.

The specs for my PC state, regarding the GPU, "Total power consumption: 150 W max."

The RX 580 4gb cards sold online "require" a 500W PSU - but apparently this is BS? My PC / RX580 runs beautifully with its 300W. I've also added an SSD and doubled the ram since purchase.

MY QUESTION:

Could I replace the RX 580 with a newer GPU requiring an 8 pin power connector but with a TDP of less than or equal to 150W?

For example, could I upgrade to a GeForce GTX 1660 Super (TDP 125W, 8-pin)?

300W PSU - getting newer graphics card with similar TDP but more pins? (9) HP Recommended

Hello,

So indeed there is no need to have 500 W for a Rx580 it is more a recommendation including the cpu consumption and other things plus a guarband to be safe but if the datasheet of your computer state that it can support a 150 W graphic card it is indeed okay to put a 125 W one but maybe you shouldn't overclock it too much because you have not much headroom.

Just check the temps with a software like PCmonitor CPUZ or thing like that

Have a nice day

300W PSU - getting newer graphics card with similar TDP but more pins? (11) HP Recommended

Hello
indeed we could say that there will be no worries, seen like that ..
But the models are very varied, it is better to refer to the manufacturer's recommendations.
For example :
https://uk.msi.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-GTX-1660-SUPER-GAMING-X/Specification

You must also check if indeed the connectors are available, and if the chosen card is not too big !!

You will probably have difficulty, if need to replace the power supply.

      FAQs

How do I know if my PSU is not giving enough power to my GPU? ›

      Display Irregularities

If the monitor is flashing or displaying dots and lines when it shouldn't be, the computer may not be getting enough power from the power supply unit. The insufficient power can cause the CPU and graphics card to render screen displays inconsistently.

What happens if my PSU doesn't have enough watts for GPU? ›

It could just not turn on, it could perform worse than expected or it could become unstable. You get screen artifacting and a potential crash (due to there being not enough voltage to support the base clock speeds of the GPU) but nothing damaging or severe.

Is 300W PSU enough for GTX 750 Ti? ›

That said, a quality 300W PSU would most likely suffice for a i3 or (in your case) C2D system running a GTX 750Ti. That is a 60-80W GPU. People suggesting 500 and 600W PSUs are seriously exaggerating the facts.

What happens if you run a GPU with underpowered PSU? ›

What happens if your Power Supply is too weak for your GPU or PC? Well, best-case scenario, your PC or GPU will just underperform. Most likely, though, it'll crash outright – and worse.

How do I know if my PSU is too weak? ›

      Overheating or Noise Issues

Overheating is a significant cause of component damage to your devices, but it's not the only sign of a weak or undersized power supply. Weak PSUs can also be detected through the sound of your device's fans working harder to combat overheating.

What happens if my power supply is too strong? ›

We recommend leaving at least 10% to 20% headroom between what you need and the power supply's maximum rating. There is no truth to the myth that a large wattage power supply will force too much power into your devices causing overheating and burnout. The power supply will only provide the needed wattage.

How do I know if my GPU power supply is strong enough? ›

The best way to know if your PSU is compatible with the GPU is to check the supported pin connectors, whether it supports 6-Pin connectors or 8-Pin connectors. If your PSU has 6-Pin connectors, but your GPU supports 8-Pin, it won't support your GPU.

Can too weak PSU damage GPU? ›

This can result in graphical glitches, crashes, or system freezes. Additionally, the GPU may draw more power than the power supply can handle, potentially causing overheating or damage to both the GPU and the power supply itself.

What happens if your GPU is underpowered? ›

You will experience flickering screens, skewed textures, deformed mesh, or geometry during these glitches. The second symptom of a GPU working on insufficient power is its low speed or frequency. In addition, you will never be able to overclock such an underpowered graphics card.

Is 300W enough for GTX 1660 Ti? ›

The specified power consumption of the card is given as 120W. You can run it from a 300W power supply provided the rest of your system never consume more than 180W at any point in time, which is a tall order since most new CPU's consume roughly 100W already.

Is 300W PSU enough for GTX 1050? ›

Absolutely. A 450W power supply is enough even for the latest i5 combined with the GTX 1060, which consumes more power than the GTX 1050. Power Supply requirements are quite overrated. Even a 300W PSU can run mid-range hardware like the GTX 1050.

What power supply do I need for RTX 300? ›

Power Supply Requirements for Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080

Mainstream Core i5/i7 and Ryzen i5/i7 system PSU requirements stay the same at 750W for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 as they are for the RTX 3090. However, you only need an 850W power supply for HEDT/Threadripper and Core i9/Ryzen 9 platforms.

Can a weak PSU cause low FPS? ›

An insufficient PSU will cause your GPU to be underpowered, and your FPS may drop drastically. Also, if your GPU is a full load and completely stressed, you'll soon see a total system crash.

Can you underpower a GPU? ›

There are several symptoms that may indicate an underpowered GPU: Poor frame rates and low performance in games and o.

What happens if you draw too much power from PSU? ›

If the pc draws more power than the supply can handle it will overheat and blow, no damage to the pc. The answer boils down to tolerances. If your PC asks for a 500 Watt supply, there is a large error margin built in. It would probably only draw 350 watts with the odd 400 watts for a startup.

Can a bad PSU affect GPU performance? ›

An insufficient PSU will cause your GPU to be underpowered, and your FPS may drop drastically. Also, if your GPU is a full load and completely stressed, you'll soon see a total system crash.

Does PSU limit GPU performance? ›

Yes, if your power supply is not powerful enough for all the components, the performance will be dramatically negatively affected. It won't work, or it might work for simple things, then fail when your graphics card powers up to run a game or graphically intense application.

Why is my GPU not using 100% power? ›

If the CPU is a bottleneck. If either GPU or CPU are power contrained. If you have an FPS limiter enabled (most games do this to stop the GPU running at 100%.
