What is in the 4th Chamber of Jacob's Well?
The few who have seen the fourth chamber say it is "virgin cave" with fantastic limestone formations and no gravel. Covering the bottom is fine silt that can totally obscure vision when kicked up by one misstep. Ironically, there was a time when it was impossible to descend into Jacob's Well.
The water inside Jacob's Well comes from the Trinity Aquifer, which practically spans the entire southwestern portion of the state. It no longer spouts water at 170 gallons per second due to development in the area. Today, the "fountain" has been reduced to a mere ripple on the surface.
There are 4 chambers that make up the Well. The first chamber is a 30 foot drop and where most of the fun takes place; it then angles down another 55 feet to the second chamber.
Two young Texas men were caught in one of the well's caves and drowned in 1979, another diver's remains were flushed out of the well in 1981, and there have been other fatalities until 2000. “This is the horror story side of it,” says Don Dibble, a dive shop owner with more than 40 years of diving experience.
You can't scuba dive there without a special permit from Hays County, and the only entity that has one is the Jacob's Well Exploration Project. At least a dozen divers have died at Jacob's Well. He admits it's scary but remains a magnet to the risk.

Jacob's Well is considered one of the most dangerous cave dives in the world because it's easy to get disorientated when diving its tricky chambers, especially the third chamber which features a “fake” exit.

Is Jacobs Well cold?
Years ago, I first discovered Jacob's Well as a fun swimming hole where you could jump wide off the rocks into the cold, cold artesian springs. It would take your breath away.
