The lowest possible grade is usually equal to a 0.0 on any scale and most times correlates to an "F" or the failing grade for the course. The scale coverts linearly from the 0.0 to 4.0 with your grade whether you are on a number or letter grading system for the class.

On the 4.0 scale, an unweighted 4.0 GPA means perfection. You need straight As in every class—not even one A- is allowed.
In the UK they grade on what amounts to a seven-point scale. 70% or above is the top band of marks. It is still relatively rare for a student to receive higher than an 80%, though it does happen. Anything in the 60% range—what is known as a 2:1—is considered a “good” grade.

40-49 is a third, 50-59 a lower second, 60-69 an upper second and 70 and above a first. In a humanities based subject it is very, very hard to get above 80, and frankly, any mark above 66 or so is excellent.
Getting over 60% is excellent because it means you have demonstrated a deep knowledge of your subject to the marker. You may be used to getting marks of 90–100%, but this is very unlikely to happen at university. Remember that marks in the 50–70% range are perfectly normal.
