In mythology, the ferryman Charon was paid one obol, representing in weight one half of a scruple of silver (itself 20 grains) or one-sixth of a drachma. It cannot have been a large amount, as the coin was placed under the tongue of the deceased by his family, so he could pay his fare across the River Styx.
In order to cross the River Styx and reach Hades, a dead person must pay a fee to the ferryman, Charon. If the correct fee is paid, Charon will take the dead across.
According to some versions, the river Styx had miraculous powers which could make someone who bathed in the waters invulnerable. According to one tradition, Achilles' mother dipped him in the river during his childhood and he thus acquired invulnerability, with the exception of the heel by which his mother held him.

According to the myths the books are based on, the consequences for breaking an oath made upon it are supposed to be extreme. Styx The oath-breaker is supposed to be exiled from the assembly of gods for ten years and be denied nectar or ambrosia during this time.

What is the story of the River Styx?
The River Styx is the main underworld river that the ferryman Charon would take the souls of the dead across into Hades. The Underworld in Greek mythology was where the souls of the dead resided, and the River Styx separated the dead in the Underworld from the living on the other side.
He was the offspring of the monsters Echidna and Typhon, and was usually described as having three heads, a serpent for a tail, and snakes protruding from multiple parts of his body. Cerberus is primarily known for his capture by Heracles, the last of Heracles' twelve labours.
