The game has six starting characters, but plenty more to unlock. Party games from the originals are available here, and you can play with up to four players in local multiplayer or simply head in alone. Sadly, these modes aren't playable online, which feels like a missed opportunity.
Unfortunately, you cannot play this game online with other people. It seems strange that you can't in a game like this. Super Monkey Ball games have always had these secondary mini games to sink some down time into if you have some friends over.

Super Monkey Ball Deluxe would have been a far better choice for an HD re-release, sporting more base levels, 240 challenge stages with full multiplayer support, plus more party games.
They are different games. Banana mania has some of the same functions as banana blitz(like the option to turn on the jump feature), but banana mania is a mash up of monkey ball 1, 2, and deluxe and only has stages from those games.
Sega seems to be putting some effort into this one, as it has a “new comic book style storytelling” method, as well as four-player local co-op and online play, on top of leaderboards. Sega also reminds us that this is the 20th anniversary of Monkey Ball, as the series debuted on June 23 in 2001.
DX Mode. This is a playlist of 46 stages from Super Monkey Ball Deluxe. Like the main game, you can jump in and out whenever you want. Of course, the levels will grow increasingly harder the further you progress. It's an interesting mix of themes as you play through it, too.
