Are SharePoint files stored locally?
We love SharePoint here at Bit-Wizards. That's because when you have files saved in SharePoint, they are not saved on your local computer. Instead, they are kept in Microsoft's cloud. You never have to worry about your computer dying or getting stolen and losing all your files.
This is because SharePoint Online is good for structuring and collaborating the way data and information is shared and file server is great for instant access to files, in particular more resource intensive ones such as video and design files.
A list can have up to 30 million items and a library can have up to 30 million files and folders. When a list, library, or folder contains more than 100,000 items, you can't break permissions inheritance on the list, library, or folder. You also can't re-inherit permissions on it.

When you use an Office program to check out a file from a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, the file is stored by default on your hard disk in a drafts folder that is in your My Documents folder.

When using onedrive.com, you can only copy up to 2500 files at one time. Although SharePoint can store 30 million documents per library, for optimum performance we recommend syncing no more than 300,000 files across all document libraries.

Behind the scenes, SharePoint in Microsoft 365 provides the content services for all files in Microsoft 365, including files you work with in Teams, Yammer, and Outlook.
By default Microsoft provides 1TB of space for a SharePoint Online subscription. But the limit for a SharePoint Online site collection is 25TB. If you want more space apart from 1TB of space, you can buy additional storage from Microsoft.

All documents and content that users upload into SharePoint are stored in the databases hosted in the SQL Server instance connected to the farm. When you create a SharePoint web application, a SQL Server database (referred to in SharePoint terminology as a content database) is connected to that web application.
