By now, it's very likely that most everyone at least knows of Netflix, if not uses the streaming service. For those of you who live under a rock, Netflix is a streaming service that provides viewers access to a variety of movies and TV shows. The company's goal is to get away from linear TV experience by providing programs that are available on-demand. The experience you get with Netflix is transferable to any screen and is personalized to your preferences. The company is present in many different countries and has been named a global leader among the streaming services.
Netflix aspires to inspire people. And the same goes for the people who work there. Rather than manage them, Netflix puts trust in its people that they will do what they think is best for the company. This management style allows employees the freedom, power and informational support to make the best decisions. Employees develop a sense of responsibility and self-discipline that drives them to produce only great work. At Netflix, they believe that people thrive on being trusted, and in turn this freedom allows them to make a difference. That's why the company fosters freedom and empowerment everytime they can.
Diving Into the Values at Netflix
Many companies have value statements, but often these written values are vague and ignored. But at Netflix, the values aren't taken lightly. The values make the difference between someone who gets rewarded and who gets let go.
The team at Netflix wants to meet you If these values represent you in more ways than not. The values are truly the foundation of Netflix, which is why they strive to hire only the best of the best. And almost as important as the values, Netflix values excellence, respect, and collaboration among its employees, which brings us to the culture.
The Culture at Netflix
Teamwork to Make the DreamWork(s)
With an amazing and unusual employee culture, Netflix is constantly finding ways to help employees become the best versions of themselves. For example, leadership at Netflix:
Netflix's core philosophy is choosing people over process. More specifically, the people they choose work well together to form a dream team. It's this approach that makes Netflix a flexible, fun, stimulating, creative, collaborative and successful organization. Employees are encouraged to take their integrity seriously with the slogan "You only say things about fellow employees you say to their face." Leadership at Netflix works hard to ensure everyone is giving each other professional, constructive feedback on a continual basis.
At Netflix, they believe that feedback is the key to success when it comes to learning faster and better. By making feedback a more positive experience, Netflix is working to normalize it everyday work life. Feedback is seen as a trust building value at Netflix. Every employee is able to avoid misunderstandings through practicing positive feedback. With a strong underlying relationship and a foundation of trust, employees are able to easily exchange feedback. That's why Netflix focuses on helping develop these types of relationships among colleagues.
The Team at Netflix
Netflix envisions its team as the dream team. This team is in constant pursuit of ambitious common goals. It's a team where you'll learn the most, perform your best work, improve the fastest and have the most fun. To ensure everyone is onboard with creating a dream team, leadership at Netflix knows they have to hire well. By fostering collaboration, embracing a diverse set of viewpoints, supporting the sharing of information and discouraging politics, the team at Netflix is truly a dream team.
Equally important to the sustainability of a dream team is the communication between leaders and team members. By maintaining a team that is in constant collaboration while staying completely honest, leadership at Netflix is able to keep surprises rare. Despite the tight ship that's run at Netflix, people there aren't afraid to make mistakes. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Netflix believes that mistakes are what help people improve. So the team is constantly trying new things.
Benefits at Netflix
It probably comes at no surprise to you that providing benefits that reflect the company's appreciation for the hard work each employee puts in is important to Netflix. That's why time away from Netflix is left up to their discretion. Netflix only cares about if you're taking off for vacation, not how long you're taking off. Without a true 9-5 schedule, the company really tries to fit into your life rather than your life fitting around work. The company also doesn't have a set holiday schedule so that you can observe what's important to you.
But above all the benefits that Netflix offers is the parental benefits you get. Before you even become a parent, Netflix is there with support. Through the global family forming benefit, employees are supported through their fertility, surrogacy or adoption journey. It's important to note that this support is offered to every employee, regardless of marital status, gender or sexual orientation. And through Carrot, Netflix even helps you cover the costs of your journey to becoming a parent. Additionally, the company again leaves your paid parental time off up to you. Generally, new parents at Netflix take 4-8 months off to be with their child. At Netflix, it's obvious you have an entire team on your side.
