Which Intel or AMD processor do I choose for my graphics card mining rig? (2024)

INTEL AMD CONCLUSION

Mining cryptocurrencies with the processor is not a profitable task, since the difficulty of most cryptocurrencies has risen a lot, it is not even worth mining Monero. A few weeks ago, information appeared indicating that Monero could be mined with the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. We did the test and it gives a performance of approximately 950H / s, so we would get € 1 a day more or less, so it would take 1000 days to pay only the processor. Today we will not tell you processors to mine, but the best processors to mount a graphics card mining rig.

There are several fundamental conditions. The first is that for this task we do not need large processors, so 'any' processor under € 100 can do us well. We must bear in mind that this is not forever, so at some point we can sell second-hand hardware and it is difficult to sell certain processors, which we would call 'crappy'.

INTEL

Intel Celeron G3900 2.8G. This two-core, two-thread processor, with the stock heatsink, is more than enough for a mining rig with six graphics cards and possibly more, but there's no need to clutter up such a simple processor either. The problem is that if we want to sell second-hand hardware for whatever reason, the processor will cost to sell.

Intel Pentium G4560 3.5GHz. Within the Intel Skylake, Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake processors, it is considered the best processor. With two cores and four threads, this processor is highly sought after for entry-level and mid-range gaming equipment, due to its excellent performance and price. It can handle what we ask of this processor and it will be easy to sell second hand.

Intel Core i3 6100. Simple processor, from the Skylake family. This processor has two cores and four threads and you don't need a newer or higher architecture processor, as it is more than enough for a good mining rig. It has a good price and it will be easy to sell it second hand.

AMD

7th Generation APU. If we want something cheap, we can opt for any of the APU A8-9600, A10-9700 and A10-9700 €. They are three valid options, all terrain, with integrated graphics and that will be easy to place in a second-hand market. Before opting for these, we would opt for a Ryzen APU, much easier to sell at any given time.

AMD Ryzen 3 1200. It is an excellent option, since it has four cores and four processing threads, in addition to Boost mode, something that all those mentioned so far, did not support this technology. It will be a simple processor to sell and that will support powerful mining rigs, with a large number of graphics cards.

AMD Ryzen 3 2200G. We have an excellent solution, which has four cores and eight processing threads, but also has integrated AMD RX Vega graphics. It has a price below € 100 and of course, it will be sold easily in a second-hand market. The solution is ideal for mining and will easily be sold second-hand with entry-level integrated graphics.

CONCLUSION

Not all that glitters is gold. Here are other problems or advantages to consider. There are many motherboards for cryptocurrency mining based on Intel Skylake processors on the market, they are easy to find, so mounting a rig based on an Intel processor is the logical thing to do. One would think that mounting a rig with an AMD APU is more logical, the problem is that motherboards for mining with socket AM4, there is only one on the market, the Biostar TB350-BTC Socket AM4. They are not easy to find, although in Coolmod they have stock. The normal thing is to mount a rig with Intel processors, not AMD and we do not know if this motherboard is compatible with the new APUs.
