1. Make 20 mL of 5 M NaOH, molecular weight 40 g/mol:
1 M = 40 g/L1 M = 4g/(100 mL)1 M = 0.4g/(10 mL)1 M = 0.8g/(20 mL)5 M = 4.0 g/(20 mL)∴ Add 4 g NaOH to 20 mL water
2. Make 100 mL of a 200X stock for ampicillin, used at a final concentration of 50 mg/ml:
1X = 50 mg/ml200X = 200*50 mg/ml = 10,000 mg/ml = 10 mg/ml(10 mg/ml)*(100 mL) = 1000 mg = 1 g∴ Add 1 g ampicillin to 100 mL water
3. How much of this stock do I use to make plates with a concentration of 20 mg/ml ampicillin?
(10,000 mg/ml stock)/(20 mg/ml final) = 500X∴ Use 1 mL of this stock for every 500 mL plates; or 2 mL per liter.
4. If 200X methionine is 0.9%, what is the final concentration in plates?
(0.9%)/200 = .0045%OR: 0.9% = 0.9g/(100 mL) = 0.009g/ml = 9 mg/ml = 9000 mg/ml&there4 conc. is (9000 mg/ml)/200 = 45 mg/ml
5. How much 40% galactose is added to make 500 mL of MacConkey-Galactose?
MacConkey plates use 1% final concentration of galactose(40%)/(1%) = 40X∴ Use 1 mL per 40 mL plates(500 mL)/(40 mL) = 12.5∴ Use 12.5 mL of 40% galactose to make 500 mL of 1% galactose

FAQs

Why is it important to use units of measurement instead of just numbers as answers to measurement questions? ›

Comparing Measurements

A common measurement system allows us to make direct comparisons instead of having to know things like how much a certain animal weighs. For example, when we're measuring weight, a standard unit used by scientists is kilograms.

Why is it important to use units when taking measurements? ›

For most quantities a unit is necessary to communicate values of that physical quantity. For example, conveying to someone a particular length without using some sort of unit is impossible, because a length cannot be described without a reference used to make sense of the value given.

What is measurement answers? ›

Measurement is a comparison of an unknown quantity with a known fixed quantity of the same kind. The value obtained on measuring a quantity is called its magnitude. The magnitude of a quantity is expressed in numbers and in its unit.

Why is it better to make a single measurement rather than doing multiple measurements? ›

When is it helpful? Measuring a single item or event more than once to eliminate error in measuring. More measurements of a single event lead to greater confidence in calculating an accurate average measurement.

Why is it better to use the metric system rather than the English system in scientific measurement? ›

The metric system is a consistent and coherent system of units. In other words, it fits together very well and calculations are easy because it is decimal. This is a big advantage for use in the home, education, industry and science.

What is the importance of measurement in our daily life? ›

Measurements continue to play an important role throughout everybody's life, for example, during a medical check-up, a sports competition, when building a house, when controlling temperature in appliances, or while cooking.

Why do you use units? ›

A unit of measurement is a standard way of expressing a physical quantity. Units of measure provide context for what numerical values represent and so convey the magnitude of physical properties.

Which unit of measure is more accurate Why? ›

The smaller the unit, the more precise the measure. Consider measures of time, such as 12 seconds and 12 days. A measurement of 12 seconds implies a time between11. 5 and 12.5 seconds.

How do you explain measurements? ›

Measurement is the basic concept in the study of Mathematics and Science. Measurement quantifies the characteristics of an object or event, which we can compare with other things or events. Measurement is the most commonly used word, whenever we deal with the division of a quantity.

How do you measure measurement? ›

When taking your measurements, always use a cloth measuring tape*. For the most accurate results, have someone else measure you. Also, make sure the tape measure is held snugly and firmly (not tightly) against your body and is always parallel to the floor for circumference measurements.

Which measurement is more accurate? ›

Explanation: Most accurate measurement will be the option with the most number of significant figures.

Why is it better to take more measurements? ›

The more measurements you average, the better the precision of the average -- the average of two measurements is more precise (i.e., probably closer to the true value) than one measurement. The average of three measurements should be more precise than the average of two, and so on.

What is the benefit of making multiple measurements? ›

The accuracy of a measurement is how close it is to the real value. If error is random, we can improve the accuracy by taking several measurements and using the average value. Thus, the average value of all the measurements on the right target of Figure 1.

Is the metric system actually better? ›

Just looking at the facts, it's easy to argue that the metric system is vastly superior. Nearly every country uses it. This almost universal standard allows you to understand measurements—and be understood—no matter where you are.

Which of the two systems of measurement is easier to use? ›

The English system is easier to use for many everyday measurements, such as length, weight and volume, while the metric system is more useful for scientific applications due to its decimal-based system.

What advantages does the metric system have over the English system? ›

Two specific advantages the metric system has over the English system of measurement is that the metric system is based on units of ten, and it is used in nearly every country in the world. Since the metric system is based on tens, it is very easy to convert from one unit to another.

Why does US not use metric? ›

The biggest reasons the U.S. hasn't adopted the metric system are simply time and money. When the Industrial Revolution began in the country, expensive manufacturing plants became a main source of American jobs and consumer products.

Is matter and measurement is important to study? ›

It is essential for understanding much of the natural world and central to many other scientific disciplines, including astronomy, geology, paleontology, biology, and medicine.

Why accuracy is a good measure? ›

Accuracy can be a useful measure if we have the same amount of samples per class but if we have an imbalanced set of samples accuracy isn't useful at all. Even more so, a test can have a high accuracy but actually perform worse than a test with a lower accuracy.

Why measure accuracy? ›

If your measurements are not very accurate or precise, then the uncertainty of your values will be very high. In more general terms, uncertainty can be thought of as a disclaimer for your measured values.

Can a unit of measurement be 100% accurate? ›

Every measurement carries a level of uncertainty which is known as an error. This error may arise in the process or due to a mistake in the experiment. So 100% accurate measurement is not possible with any method. An error may be defined as the difference between the measured and actual values.

What is measurement easy? ›

Measurement is a comparison of an unknown quantity with a known fixed quantity of the same kind. The value obtained on measuring a quantity is called its magnitude. Magnitude of a quantity is expressed as numbers in its units.

What is your own understanding about measurements? ›

Measurement is the quantification of attributes of an object or event, which can be used to compare with other objects or events. In other words, measurement is a process of determining how large or small a physical quantity is as compared to a basic reference quantity of the same kind.

What do you mean by measurement explain by giving examples? ›

Measurement is the process of comparison of a given physical quantity with a known standard quantity of some nature. For example, in the measurement expressed as 10 kg, 10 is the magnitude of the physical quantity and kg is the standard unit used to express mass of the physical quantity.

What is the purpose of measurement in learning? ›

All measurement in education has the common aims of (1) arriving at defensible conclusions regarding students' ability, achievement, or interests, (2) gauging student progress toward specified educational goals, and (3) improving teaching and learning.

What is an example of a measurement? ›

Measurement is a system to measure the height, weight, capacity or even amount of certain objects. We can measure how long things are or how tall or how far two things are. For example: The height of Oliver is 100 inches and the height of the giraffe is 150 inches.

How do you measure step by step? ›

Mark your starting point and walk until you've counted 50 steps. Mark the end of your last step. Measure between the two marks. Follow the same calculations as above: distance in feet/number of steps = step length and distance in feet/number of strides = stride length.

What is a measurement in math? ›

Definition of Measure
