Your identity document (for example your passport or identity card) will be checked when you arrive at a UK port or airport to make sure you're allowed to come into the country. It should be valid for the whole of your stay. You may also need a visa to come into or travel through the UK, depending on your nationality.

In general, crime in London, while often thought of as a problem in the U.K., is considerably less than in other major American cities. According to the BBC, in 2022 London had 109 homicides, for a homicide rate of 1.22 per 100,000 residents – lower than 96 of the 100 largest U.S. cities.

You do not need to take any COVID-19 travel tests or self-isolate on arrival in England if you qualify as fully vaccinated. The testing and quarantine rules for international travel to England will change 11 February 2022. You can now choose a lateral flow test or a PCR test as your post arrival test.

You can visit the UK as a Standard Visitor for tourism, business, study (courses up to 6 months) and other permitted activities. You can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months. You might be able to apply to stay for longer in certain circ*mstances, for example to get medical treatment.

Can I go to England with my U.S. passport? ›

You must have a valid passport to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay. You may also need a visa, depending on which country you're from and the reason for your stay.

The officer scans your passport to see basic info: Name, date of birth, country of citizenship, etc. The passport page containing that basic info also shows a 'code key' that, when scanned, grants access to the chip which contains the same info.
