What is a good IXL snapshot score? ›

This action plan shows you their knowledge levels in each strand, and the specific skill suggestions that will help them make progress from where they are. We recommend having students reach a SmartScore of 80 or 90 in each of those skills to accelerate their growth.

INTERPRETING IXL DIAGNOSTIC SCORES

Criterion-referenced scores: IXL Diagnostic scores correspond to grade levels. For example, a score of 350 indicates that the student has acquired about 50% of third-grade material, whereas a score of 400 indicates that the student is ready to learn fourth-grade material.

This usually takes about 75-80 questions for math and 55-65 questions for English language arts, and can be done over the course of a few sessions. The IXL Continuous Diagnostic helps you assess your students' grade-level proficiency in both math and English language arts. Getting started is simple!

IXL's Diagnostic was found to be a good predictor of subsequent academic performance as measured by MAP Growth, with a correlation of . 85 in math and . 82 in ELA.

The Snapshot mode for the Real-Time Diagnostic allows administrators to get all the benefits of a benchmark assessment but in a flexible, lightweight format.

As always, a diagnostic level indicates a student's working grade level—for example, a level of 800 indicates readiness to work on eighth grade level skills. When the numbers appear as a range, this means that the Diagnostic is still narrowing down the student's exact learning level.

We obtained the available end-of-year diagnostic score from the date closest to their state assessment in Spring 2021. Among the 3,963 students, the average IXL Diagnostic math score was 645.00 (SD = 147.77), with 2,035 (51%) students performing at or above their grade level.

A score of 80 is considered proficiency and 90 is excellence.

Each time students update their diagnostic, they'll receive an updated IXL action plan. Always encourage them to work on skills from their most recent action plan. We recommend aiming for proficiency (SmartScore of 80) in two of these skills every week to maximize academic gains.

If you see a star burst icon to the right of a student's name, it means that their diagnostic is up to date! Click on the student's name for a breakdown of their diagnostic scores by strand. Diagnostic scores on IXL correspond to grade levels. A score of 500 indicates readiness to begin working on 5th grade skills.

Using the Student Progress report

After selecting a student, the report will display one row for every skill that they've practiced. Skills are organized by subject, grade level, and category. For each skill, you can see how much time the student has spent and how many questions the student has answered.

The Real-Time Diagnostic is always available; students can enter the Diagnostic at any time and answer as many questions as they like. When students first use the Diagnostic, we recommend they aim to diagnose until their complete diagnostic data is revealed—for most students, this will be around 45 minutes per subject.

Students will need to answer as many as 10 questions correctly in a row to achieve mastery. For most skills on IXL, students will have to complete a minimum of 28 questions to earn a SmartScore of 100. When a student achieves a score of 100 on IXL, you can feel confident that they have truly mastered that skill.
