What could make your PEI summer staycation more memorable than staying somewhere truly unique?

One of the best things about using AirBnb for your vacation accommodations is that it gives you access to some really unique properties that you just can’t find when staying at a traditional hotel, inn, or B&B.

How would you like to sleep in a train? Or maybe in a lighthouse? Maybe a sustainable, off-grid earthship is more your fancy? How about a house that rotates like a giant lazy susan so that you never need to argue over who gets the bedroom with the best view? You all do!

We’ve scoured AirBnB looking for the most unique stays in PEI that you need to check out this summer. They’re booking fast so kick your vacation planning into overdrive to snag one of these beauties.

Seaside Treehouse

What adult hasn’t secretly wanted to have their own treehouse? This gorgeous tent can fulfill that fantasy. Built right in the trees along the Brudenell River you couldn’t ask for a better nature commune. The hosts have provided everything you need for the perfect glamping experience, including the tools to get your own seafood. “Go beachcombing for clams and oysters along the rivers edge, use the outdoor seafood steamer provided to cook your catch. Or grab a kayak and venture out to try your hand at fishing on the river, fishing gear and tackle provided, use the BBQ to cook your freshly caught fish.”

Where: Georgetown
Sleeps: 2
Price: $179/night, 2-night

Rotating House

You’ve heard of rotating restaurants, but how about a rotating house? Every room has the best view in the place, making a full rotation in 45 minutes before rotating back – and all controlled by a phone app. You can also tour the basem*nt to see how the whole thing works. Each of the four suites have a master suite with a king bed, queen-sized Murphy bed in the living room as well as a pull-out couch so the whole family can take part. Be some of the only people this summer to say they’ve slept in a rotating house – but hurry, it’s booking fast!

Where: North Rustico

Blue Caboose

Choo Choo! Wouldn’t you love to spend a vacation in this blue Boston & Maine caboose? Originally from New Hampshire, it now makes its home in PEI. The hosts say its great for those who “enjoy a quiet retreat, clam digging, local lighthouses, golfing, and wine tasting.” The caboose has been coupled with a beautiful wood cabin that gives you lots of space and comfort, while keeping that stunning, unique exterior. The caboose contains the kitchen and tv lounge with a pull out sofa, while the cabin has the queen bedroom and bathroom. Just think of the unique photos you could post to Facebook after staying here!

Where: Flat River
Sleeps: 4
Price: $165/night, 3-night minimum

Off-Grid Earth House

Want to make your summer vacation as sustainable as possible? Consider booking a few nights at this beautiful off-grid property. Made from rammed earth tires plus recycled and natural materials, this beautiful house blends ancient building techniques with modern comforts. If you’re in need of a digital detox, this is your spot. There is no wifi of TV, but that makes it a perfect time to catch up on your reading or to go for walks in the woods. The hosts describes it as “serene, beautiful, and a perfect place for nature lovers to disconnect from the grid while still being centrally located and close to Cavendish.”

Where: Hope River
Sleeps: 2
Price: $110/night

Douglas Barn

Tired of cookie cutter chain hotel rooms? Why not book this 120 year old barn for your next PEI trip? It was renovated in 2019 to provide modern conveniences and comfort, like a full kitchen and Netflix, while maintaining its historic charm. One of the best parts about staying in a barn with strong beams? Hammock chairs! And loft beds. Climb up to the loft for a good night’s sleep on the queen sized bed.

Where: Georgetown
Sleeps: 2
Price: $94/night, 2-night minimum

Lighthouse

While not the place for a couple on a budget, if you’re a large family and you want to stay somewhere truly unique and very special, take a look at this five level lighthouse. Be amazed by the breathtaking views from the rooftop deck, the 360-degree watchroom floor and main floor window seats overlooking Rustico Bay and a golf course. You’ll love all the beautiful woodwork and the subtle nautical theme that tastefully runs through the house. The property includes a serviced bunkhouse, a private beach and a large natural playground.

Where: Cymbria
Sleeps: 8
Price: $720/night, 7-night minimum

Sustainable Earthship

This AirBnB is so unique and spectacular that we just had to list it. Our favourite features of this “earthship” is the amount of natural light that it gets from it’s full wall of windows and the indoor garden, irrigated from the home’s grey water. Talk about bringing the outdoors in. This sustainable house feels like the perfect combo of bright, airy treehouse and warm, cozy Hobbit hole. Bookmark this one for sure and check back for future availability.

Where: Wellington
Sleeps: 6
Price: $175/night, 2-night minimum

Book Your Trip to PEI

Book Your Flight

Find a cheap flight by using Expedia. It’s one of my favourite search engines because itallows you to search for and compare flights from multiple airlines.

Book Your Accommodations

You can book your hotel with Booking.com as they have the most comprehensive inventory so they are best for booking a hotel. If you want to stay in a vacation rental or cottage in Prince Edward Island, use VRBO to find the perfect place for the whole family.

Book Your Car Rental

Prince Edward Island has many small towns and it’s best to have a vehicle at your disposal. Be sure to book your car rental with Discover Cars early because they often sell out in summer.

Book Your Travel Insurance

While PEI is generally a safe province, you never know when something could happen. Be prepared with travel insurance from SafetyWing.
