You'll need a minimum of 7 Strange Coins to buy anything. Update: Xur will be in a different place every week, but he will always be in the Tower. Important: Xur sells one piece of gear in each class, in a random slot.

Strange Coins can be obtained by completing the Weekly Heroic Strikes (level 22 will grant the player three, level 26 six, or level 28 nine), and occasionally drop during Public Events and Crucible matches.

Strange Coins are farmed quickly on Eternity, but can be done anywhere. Completing your dailies can be a quick and easy way to get there. However, maxing out on Strange Coins is best done through Dares of Eternity runs and the Grasp of Avarice dungeon.

Treasure Keys

The first and most simple one is from the chest at the end of a Dares of Eternity run. This chest will always give one Treasure Key, one Strange Coin, and one piece of Legendary gear from the world loot pool.

Destiny 2: Strange Key Used (Magnum Opus)

The first step toward using the Strange Key is to travel to Xur's Treasure Hoard on Eternity. Once a Destiny 2 player has loaded into this area, they should use the portal to travel to the Valley and then head forward and slightly to the right.

Take the strange key from Xur. Use the strange key in the snow swept valley area. Descend the cave and retrieve an anomalous object. Deliver the anomalous object to Banshee-44 in the Tower LZ and claim the Forerunner magnum.

The Agent of the Nine's inventory will no longer refresh after the weekly reset, ensuring his wares remain the same, even if he is being held hostage. You can still expect new stock each weekend, though. Players can still hold Xur hostage, but his stock won't refresh on reset.

However, unlike Destiny 1, you won't need Strange Coins to buy his wares. Instead, Xur accepts Legendary Shards. The only guaranteed way to get Legendary Shards is through dismantling Legendary weapons, so you should definitely stock up on a few of those.

He will appear in the public sector of any of the four worlds: European Dead Zone, Titan, IO, and Nessus or in the Tower.

Generally, rare coins increase in value over the long term and can provide significant gains in many cases. However, keep in mind that there are no guarantees for how a coin will change in value.
