Well 4TB in 4 month is a lot, but not unrealistic, the computer I'm using now has run for about 2 years and I have 17TB writes, it is my work computer that run 10 hours a day and I'm a heavy user using serval virtuel machines on my computer.

But still you don't need to worry. SSDs last a lot longer than you think, this test http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead show the SSDs to last about 1PB writes and the good ones lasted for 2,5PB the newner samsung 3dnand should last even longer.

But if you say the SSD will last for 1PB and one TB writes a month, like the guy you talk of, the SSD will still last for 41.7 years.
All this talk of fear of SSD durability is overrated

no. unless your willing to move the pagefile to a secondary mechanical drive.
windows needs a pagefile no matter how much ram you have so turning it off completely will have a negative effect at some point...
so if your worried about prematurity damaging your ssd then move it over to your d: drive if you have 1.

I see you have 16GB of RAM. just cut the PF down to 1 or 2 GB, it will be enough for anything but still not produce complaints by Photoshop and like programs that insist on PF.

You don't HAVE to reduce it but it's a compromise for those worried about SSD usage and wear. I do it solely to spare some space.

Should I disable pagefile on SSD? (2024)

FAQs

Should you disable page file on SSD? ›

The vast majority of users should never disable the pagefile or mess with the pagefile settings – just let Windows handle the pagefile and use the available RAM for file caching, processes, and Superfetch.

Should I turn on paging file for SSD? ›

Some “experts” suggest leaving the Page File on the SSD to maximize system performance while others suggest placing it on an installed hard drive (if one is present of course) in order to maximize the life of the SSD.

Should I disable page file on SSD reddit? ›

My approach is:
  1. Disable pagefile and hibernate. If no errors experienced for a month, you're fine.
  2. If Ram eventually is all used up, you can manually clean it, using Ramapp or some auto cleaning app.
  3. if running big apps or games, pagefile is needed (I prefer static size file equal to Ram size).

Does paging file increase performance? ›

The Windows paging file, or pagefile, is sometimes called Windows 10 virtual memory. It supports system crash dumps and enables the system to use physical RAM more efficiently by writing some file content to a hard disk if the main memory is near capacity.

Do SSDs degrade with reads? ›

However, in comparison to conventional HDDs, the mechanics of SSD don't degrade when only reading data. This means, by only reading data, an SSD will not wear out, which brings us to the conclusion that it depends on the write and delete processes.

What is the lifespan of a SSD? ›

SSDs Have a Long Lifespan

Since SSDs don't have moving parts, they're very reliable. In fact, most SSDs can last over five years, while the most durable units exceed ten years. However, how long your SSD will last depends on how often you write data into it, and you could use that to estimate the lifespan.

Is it OK to leave SSD on all the time? ›

There is no problem with leaving your External SSD drive plugged as long as you do not leave it on top of something that generates heat or in direct sunlight. The only other thing you want to check is to make sure Windows Auto Defragmenter (disk optimization ) is turned off for that drive.

What degrades an SSD? ›

This process is called a program/erase cycle, or P/E cycle for short. Importantly, each SSD has a limited number of P/E cycles. Each P/E cycle gradually degrades the memory of an SSD's cells until they eventually become worn down. At this point, you will no longer be able to rely on the SSD to store information.

Does SSD eliminate file fragmentation? ›

Solid-State Drives Don't Suffer From Fragmentation

As the name implies, a solid-state drive has no moving components. There's no read/write head assembly, so file fragmentation is pretty much a non-issue. The SSD has a tiny seek time, and so defragmentation doesn't help to improve performance.

What files should I keep on my SSD? ›

Does disabling hibernation improve performance? ›

Overall, your computer will be just as fast (or slow) as it was when you put it to hibernate. The difference is in the booting process. Hard drives (and even solid state drives) are much slower than RAM. Since “Sleep” mode preserves the RAM “as-is,” it often starts up much faster than hibernation.

Is sleep mode OK for SSD? ›

Sleep is suspend to RAM, it makes no difference what drive you have. If you hibernate, it writes what's in RAM to disk and shuts off, so I suppose that could be bad if you don't like writing to your SSD, but I won't expect to have any problems from it.
