Scoring (2024)

The list of top scores for each type of Solitaire game can be displayed by selecting Score History from the Window menu. The number of top scores Klondike remembers can be adjusted in the Preferences dialog from 10 to 250. For more details, see the Help page for Play.

If you check the Casino scoring box in the Preferences dialog, the game is scored according to the common wagering scheme: You "pay" $52 to begin play, and you "win" various amounts according to the game you are playing. Klondike maintains separate score history for regular scoring and Casino scoring versions of each game.

Regular scoring is more like a video game, including a penalty for slow play.

For Klondike, Canfield and Racing Demons:

Note: figures for Canfield and Racing Demons are in brackets [].

Plus

  • 5 POINTS - Adding a card to the tableau, either by playing one from the deck or reserve or by turning over the top card of an uncovered column. Maximum: 220 [235] points.
  • 10 POINTS - Adding a card to the foundations, whether from the deck, reserve or tableau. Maximum: 520 points.

Maximum available: 740 [755] points.

Minus

  • -2 POINTS - Every 15 seconds of elapsed time, while the Game Window is active.

Penalties

Klondike permits you to make some moves which are not allowed according to most rule books, but you pay a penalty for these moves as follows:

  • -5 POINTS - The rules do not permit moving cards from the foundations back into play in the Tableau. Doing so will incur a 5 point penalty for each infraction.
  • -25 POINTS - (Klondike only) Most rule books stipulate that only one pass through the deck is allowed, turning up one card at a time. Some rule books permit turning up three cards at a time. If you turn up three cards at a time, Klondike will allow you to make three passes through the deck before exacting a 25 point penalty for each subsequent Repeat.
  • -100 POINTS - (Klondike only) If you turn up one card at a time, every Repeat will cost 100 points.

Bonus

In addition, a WINNING BONUS is calculated as follows:

  • { ( End of Game score ) - ( 1 POINT per elapsed second ) } times 10.

The game is won when all cards are face up in the tableau and foundations, with none remaining in the deck.

Since the maximum end of game score is 740 [755] points (assuming you took no time to win the game!), the largest conceivable bonus is 7400 [7550] points. Total scores of over 6000 can actually be achieved.

Casino scoring

As you deal each game, you are ‘charged’ $52, which appears as a negative score. Each card moved to the Foundations earns $5. If you win the game, moving all 52 cards to the Foundations earns $260, for a net winning score of $208.

For Golf:

Plus

  • 10 POINTS - Playing a card from the tableau to the deck.
  • 5 POINTS - When playing a series of cards from the tableau to the deck, each card after the first scores an extra 5 points for every preceding card in the series. Thus, the second card in a series adds five points, the third another ten, etc.

Minus

  • -2 POINTS - Every 15 seconds of elapsed time, while the Game Window is active.

Bonus

In addition, a WINNING BONUS is calculated as follows:

  • { ( End of Game score ) - ( 1 POINT per elapsed second ) } times 10.
  • PLUS - 500 points for every card remaining in the deck.

The game is won when all cards have been moved from the tableau to the deck.

Since the maximum end of game score is 3325 points (assuming you took no time to win the game!), the largest conceivable bonus is 33250 points. Total scores of over 6000 can actually be achieved.

Casino scoring

As you deal each game, you are ‘charged’ $52, which appears as a negative score. You earn it back by making ‘par’, which means removing all but 4 cards from the Tableau. If you beat ‘par’ (i.e., fewer than 4 cards remain in the tableau), you earn an additional $52.

For FreeCell:

Plus

  • 10 POINTS - Playing a card to the foundations.
  • 5 POINTS - Moving a King to an empty column.

Minus

  • -2 POINTS - Every 15 seconds of elapsed time, while the Game Window is active.
  • -1 POINT - Every time a card is moved EXCEPT moving a King to an empty column.

Bonus

In addition, a WINNING BONUS is calculated as follows:

  • { ( End of Game score ) - ( 1 POINT per elapsed second ) } times 10.

The game is won when no lower-valued cards are covered by a higher-value card, or all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Casino scoring

As you deal each game, you are ‘charged’ $52, which appears as a negative score. Each card moved to the Foundations earns $5. If you win the game, moving all 52 cards to the Foundations earns $260, for a net winning score of $208.
