Safu (2024)

Safu (サフ Safu) is a resident of the city of No.6 and the childhood best friend of Shion.

Appearance[]

Safu is a teenage girl with dark brown hair that is chin length and brown eyes. She wears a white jacket along with a turtleneck pink shirt, pink scarf, black tights, red skirt, and brown boots. When she was younger she would wear "out dated clothes" like sweaters her grandmother would knit for her.

Personality[]

Safu is a straightforward, blunt, person. She says what she feels like saying when she wants to. If someone wants to pick a fight, she doesn't hesitate to fight back (as seen in Drenched Rat).

Much like Shion at the start of the series, she seems to be, though to a lesser degree, unable to express herself in a sense that would be like 'normal' people. For example instead of confessing her love to Shion like a 'normal person', she instead asks for his sperm.

Beyond that she is an affectionate girl that cares a lot for the one she loves.

She's extremely loyal and caring, willing to sacrifice herself in order to help Shion and Nezumi take No. 6 down. In her final moments, she laments losing everything and everyone she cares about, but sticks to her decision.

Plot[]

Safu, 12 years old, presents her presentation in front of the class. After her presentation, her classmates starts teasing her of her clothes because they are "last years trend". Angry, Safu quickly proceeds to attack the boy but soon being stopped. In the manga, Shion remarks the sweater Safu is wearing fits her character, and because of that, he likes it. Safu blushes and thanks him for being the first one to say that. From the start it is very clear Shion is the upmost important person in her life. In the anime, Shion is invited to stay over for dinner for his birthday. For his birthday gift, Shion was given a sweater that is the same as Safu's, expect the color was changed to purple because his name is from a purple flower. After celebrating, Safu proudly shows Shion her closet full with clothes, to brag and show of, how it all was made by her grandmother and she would not have to buy clothes. Ready to leave, Safu stops him and says she still needs to give him is birthday gift and that the sweater doesn't count since her grandmother was the who made it therefore it's not a gift from Safu. Not looking, Safu quickly kisses Shion on the cheek, implying the kiss is the gift. Naive Shion ask why she kissed him like his mother kisses him. Before Safu was about to explain how it's different, they both get distracted by the Moon Drop crying. Since it is extremely rare, they talk about it before Shion leaves.

After the short time skip, they both are now 16. Safu and Shion meet up at a shop after some time not seeing each other. When Safu catches him off track, she questions him what happened to him when they were 12. Because of the situation, he says he doesn't want to talk about it, instead Safu talks about her opportunity going to boarding school in No.5 for two years. Excited, Safu asks if he is jealous. Immediately after Shion says yes, he gets shut down by angry Safu psychologically breaking down why he is not. Admitting defeat, Safu quickly leaves with Shion quickly follows. Dropping her off, Safu asks him for a request before her departure. Blushing, she asks if she can have his sperm. Taken aback, Shion embarrassingly doesn't know how to answer. She begins to state why she is perfect for him since she knows everything about it. Then says she doesn't even need his sperm, she just wants to be with him. Still embarrassed and not knowing what to do, Shion states he only thought of her as friend. Tired of his naive and stupid behavior, she says to forget it and begans to walk away. Before she is about to leave, Shion yells to wait for two years; within two years after she comes back, he will grant her wish. Smiling, Safu says she will study hard enough to make sure no boys can look at her.

She returns to No.6 after she learns her grandmother died. When waiting at the airpot, she talks to an elderly about her thoughts and doubts of the city. Visiting her grandmother's grave at the retirement home, she is suspicious about her grandmothers death. Wanting to find comfort, she is ready to call Shion only to discover Shion is missing and a criminal. She goes to Karan to find more information which Karan admits Shion is at the West Block and about the city's lies and deceit. Safu decides to go out and find him to which Karan begs her not to, believing Shion would want to most right now is for Safu to be safe. Safu apologizes for being selfish but she can not sit when knowing Shion is in danger, admitting to Karan Safu is in love with her son. Crying, Karan smiles is grateful for Safu and informs her of Nezumi's existence. However Safu was under tight surveillance from the security bureau and when leaving the bakery, she was then captured and brought to the correctional facility as a "Sample".

In a tube filled with water, upside down Safu is scared and begs to Shion to save her.

In a flashback, Safu and Shion are walking through a forest, she asks him if isn’t this where he works. She feels nothing strange about Shion’s comments on the forest, delighted that it is so beautiful here. Safu is joyful at seeing a squirrel and replying to Shion she did not know beech nuts could be eaten, also not knowing what a shell is.

Happily wondering why they are discussing nuts and shells during their walk, Safu wants to talk about matters close to the heart. Wanting to tell Shion how she feels, Safu asks him if he is happy when he is with her. Thinking he is always so gentle with him, she wishes they could always be together, and visualises Shion wanting to be together with her stating that she is his most important person.

Within her mind Safu contemplates who does she love and want, it is Shion who she really wants to see.

Powers & Abilities[]

Over all Safu is a very smart girl and was in the same advanced course as Shion. Her specialty is physiology.

Relationships[]

Shion - Shion and Safu have been best friends since childhood. They went to the same school until Shion was disqualified. On Shion's 12th birthday, Safu made him a cake and her grandmother knitted him a sweater similar to Safu's. Safu, due to her extensive knowledge of physiology, knows Shion very well. She questions him about his not being an elite citizen any longer, and later questions him if he's jealous of her elite citizenship. Although Shion says he is, Safu is able to tell he is lying.

Safu develops feelings of love for Shion, and before her departure from No. 6, she tells Shion that she wants to have sex with him, pointing out that they have genes ideal for any offspring. Shion, seeing Safu as a dear friend, says that he doesn't want to sleep with her on a whim, and would rather wait two years before they do anything serious on the spur of the moment. Safu agrees, but points out that Shion has a lot to learn.

After Shion leaves relocates to West Block, and Safu returns to No. 6 due to her grandmother's passing, Safu is abducted by No. 6 authorities and taken to the Correctional Facility. When Shion finds out, he is distraught and determined to save her, going as far as attempting to head to the Correctional Facility on his own without any help. After Nezumi criticises Shion's approach to the situation, the two agree to retrieve her together, along with Inukashi and Rikiga's assistance.

In the Correctional Facility, Safu, scared and hoping to see Shion, appears able to communicate - at the very least - her location to Shion, which energises and motivates him considerably. However, when Shion and Nezumi eventually reach her, she begs Shion not to go near her, as she is no longer what she once was and doesn't want Shion to find out. She backs away at many of Shion's attempts to embrace her, and can only stand helplessly as he goes right through her in a final attempt. She laments her position and what No. 6 has done to her, but, ultimately, is happy to have been able to see Shion one last time, a request she made to Eluyrias herself.

Furthering her care for Shion, Safu urges him and Nezumi to escape the facility while it falls apart and is destroyed. She cannot be saved, but she doesn't want Shion to face the consequences of her own situation. Once Shion finally leaves, crying out for her, Safu attempts to be strong, smiling sorrowfully, but momentarily loses her composure, heartbroken over the imminent. Even so, she sticks to her resolve.

Later, as Eluyrias appears before Shion and Nezumi, she relays a message from Safu to Shion, who requests that she gives a message to Safu from himself. Eluyrias agrees, yet there's no further mention of the communication.

Nezumi - The first time they meet each other was not physical and Safu was unaware it was Nezumi. She mentions during her departure for boarding school, whatever distracted Shion, which was Nezumi's voice, it was something that made Safu see Shion act like that for the fist time.

During the first days Shion is staying with Nezumi, Nezumi states Shion must forget and throw away his life, his memories, and relationships from No.6 since he is no longer part of that world. After some time Shion is at the West Block, Nezumi jokes that Shion needs to learn fast, eat more, and stop being naive if he wants to sleep with his friend - referring to Safu.

When Safu was captured by the Security Bureau, Karan wrote to Nezumi about her capture. Nezumi decides to free her by himself because he is afraid of Shion doing something stupid. He gives up tons of money to find a way to rescue her because he knows how much she means to Shion.

Once they finally meet in person, Nezumi is rudely asking her questions as if she wasn't just kidnapped, however either he knows it isn't the real Safu (anime) or he is suspicious of her (manga). Safu catches on that he keeps asking questions after question, she then states that she finally meet who Nezumi is. Despite that, Safu still thanks Nezumi and Shion for what they are doing. Once both boys are out of site, Safu expresses her sadness by talking out loud to Eluyrias how it is unfair that the one by Shion side is Nezumi and not her. However she still says goodbye once it is time for her to leave.

Shion with all of his negative emotions after losing his childhood friend, blames Nezumi for only wanting to use her to destroy No.6. In other words, Shion remarks to Nezumi that he was the one who killed Safu. Depending in the anime or manga, he either stays quiet for a while, ultimately confirming he did use her just for his true motives- destroying No.6 (anime). Or he rethinks his true motives which makes his inner thoughts taunt him by repeating that he did use her and that he did kill her, which eventually he says to Shion that he did use her (manga).

Elyurias - Safu is seen as the ideal host for Eluyrias.
