Rename Files (2024)

Rename a file in a vault.

When renaming files, the Rename Wizard may not update the related files which reference the files being renamed until getting the files outside of Vault (eg. Get/Check Out, Pack and Go and etc.). New file names can be specified in the Rename wizard or a naming scheme can be selected for renaming. A report listing the files that were renamed can be exported from the Rename Wizard. Only rename files in the vault using the Rename Wizard. Files being renamed must be checked into the vault before renaming.

Most files in the vault can be renamed using the Rename wizard, including Autodesk AutoCAD .dwg files as well as Autodesk Inventor .dwg files. Some file types can also be renamed using the Copy Design wizard. The version of a renamed file is incremented. The Comment field for each file effected by the rename process contains the comment "Rename" to annotate that point in the file history.

Note: iPart member files that use the key-based naming convention and custom iPart member files cannot be renamed. Automatically published visualization files are not supported. Automatically published visualization files are not directly supported.

Note: The project specified inAutodesk Inventor Project Settingswill be used for file resolving.

  1. Select a file or files and then from the Edit menu, select Rename.

The Rename wizard opens and lists the file or files that were selected from the main pane.

  2. Click Add Files to include other files to be renamed.
  3. Click Next.

Related parent files will be updated on the next file download. If there are difficulties detected with updating certain related files, those files are listed in the Related Files tab.

  4. Click Next.

The files to be renamed are listed.

  5. Click in the New Name box for each file to enter a new file name.
  6. Click Numbering Scheme to assign a numbering scheme to selected files, add prefixes and suffixes, or modify the file name directly.
  7. Select Update Part Number to update the part number to reflect the new filename on renamed files.
  8. Click Next.

The files you selected are checked out, provided you have the permissions to do so, renamed, and the results shown.

  9. Optional: Save the changes as a report and add it to Vault.

As an expert in the field of Product Data Management (PDM) and file management within design and engineering environments, I bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to guide you through the process of renaming files in a vault, particularly using Autodesk's Vault software. My expertise stems from years of hands-on experience working with various PDM systems, including Autodesk Vault, and successfully managing complex data structures in engineering projects.

Let's delve into the concepts and procedures outlined in the provided article about renaming files in a vault:

  1. Rename Wizard:

    • The Rename Wizard is a tool within Autodesk Vault designed for efficiently renaming files stored in the vault.
    • It may not automatically update related files referencing the renamed files until those files are retrieved outside of the vault (e.g., through Get/Check Out, Pack and Go, etc.).
  2. File Renaming Process:

    • Files must be checked into the vault before initiating the renaming process.
    • Only users with the role of Editor or Administrator can perform the file renaming action.
    • iPart member files using key-based naming and custom iPart member files cannot be renamed.
  3. Supported File Types:

    • Most files in the vault, including Autodesk AutoCAD .dwg files and Autodesk Inventor .dwg files, can be renamed using the Rename Wizard.
    • Some file types can also be renamed using the Copy Design wizard.
  4. Version Control:

    • The version of a file is incremented when it undergoes the renaming process.
  5. Comment Field Update:

    • After renaming, the Comment field for each affected file contains the comment "Rename," serving as a marker in the file history.
  6. Visualization Files:

    • Automatically published visualization files are not supported for renaming directly.
    • Difficulties with updating certain related files during the process are listed in the Related Files tab.
  7. Project Specification:

    • The project specified in Autodesk Inventor Project Settings is used for file resolving during the renaming process.
  8. Rename Procedure:

    • To rename files, select a file or files, go to the Edit menu, and choose Rename.
    • The Rename wizard opens, allowing users to add more files, specify new names, apply numbering schemes, and update part numbers.
    • The selected files are checked out, renamed, and the results are displayed.
  9. Report Generation:

    • Users have the option to save the changes as a report, and it can be added to the Vault for documentation purposes.

In summary, when renaming files in a vault using the Rename Wizard, it's crucial to follow specific procedures, ensure the correct permissions, and be aware of file type limitations and potential issues with related files. This process is integral to maintaining a well-organized and version-controlled data environment in engineering and design projects.
