An old school bond, commonly referred to as a bond, is an item that allows a player to pay for membership, both for Old School RuneScape and RuneScape 3, on their account. Bonds can be purchased from Jagex for real-world money or in RuneScape for in-game money, keeping RuneScape as a free-to-play game. However, bonds are expensive, requiring time to gain enough coins for a player to be able to afford a bond from the Grand Exchange. Bonds can be redeemed in-game for membership or traded with other players for coins or items, providing a means for players to buy membership with in-game items or (indirectly) in-game items with real-world money.

When bought with real-world money from Jagex, tradeable bonds are added to the bond pouch. These bonds may be traded with other players, sold on the Grand Exchange, or used on another player to donate it to them for free, including on ironmen players (although ironmen cannot donate bonds to other players). Any of these transfers makes the bond untradeable and unable to be donated.

Players can convert untradeable bonds into tradeable bonds again by choosing the "Convert" option and paying 10% of a tradeable bond's current Grand Exchange value (977,069 coins). Players can indirectly donate bonds even when they become untradeable by redeeming them for a membership passcode and then using that passcode on an account of their choosing.

The total cost of buying and converting a bond is 10,747,758 coins.

Players can store up to 20 bonds (tradeable, untradeable, or a mix of both) in their bond pouch. This is a feature of each player's Old School RuneScape account rather than an in-game item, and can be accessed via the Account Management interface.

Bonds can never be dropped, destroyed, alchemised, or sold in shops. They are always kept on death, even when inside the Wilderness. The only ways to get rid of bonds are either trading away your bond, or redeeming the bond for a membership code.

Players may only buy or sell one bond per Grand Exchange slot. They are the only item that ironmen are permitted to purchase on the Grand Exchange via a special ironman-only interface. This is another exception of the rule in which Ironmen are not allowed to trade.

Membership time[edit | edit source]

At any time, whether tradeable or untradeable, a player can redeem one or more of their bonds for membership:

• 14 days for 1 bond
• 29 days for 2 bonds (1 day extra compared to 2 bonds separately redeemed)
• 45 days for 3 bonds (3 days extra compared to 3 bonds separately redeemed)
• 12 months for 20 bonds (Premier Membership; 85 days extra compared to 20 bonds redeemed separately)

Display name change[edit | edit source]

Members can change their display name using the option in their Account Management interface or on the RuneScape website under Account Settings. A player can do this once every 28 days for free, or can spend 1 bond from their bond pouch to do so without having to wait. Note that if a player changes their display name on the website after already having changed it once, they may choose their previous name, but when changing their display name in-game, they may not.

Membership passcode[edit | edit source]

A membership passcode can be purchased for one bond and redeemed for membership on another account.^[1] This is currently the best way for ironmen to receive bonds as it bypasses the need to make the bond tradeable to donate the bond, and thus avoid paying the fee of 10% of the bond's Grand Exchange value.

The following table shows the average cost in coins per day of membership, based on the Grand Exchange price of bonds. This could be interpreted as the amount of money a player would need to make per day on average if planning on paying for membership by buying bonds in-game.
