In contract law, the term "null and void" means the contract was never valid. Therefore, the contract has no legal effect. This is different from having a contract invalidated.

The null keyword is a literal that represents a null reference, one that does not refer to any object. null is the default value of reference-type variables. Ordinary value types cannot be null, except for nullable value types.

A null indicates a lack of a value, which is not the same thing as a zero value. For example, consider the question "How many books does Adam own?" The answer may be "zero" (we know that he owns none) or "null" (we do not know how many he owns).

A null value may be caused by missing genetic material, or a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) near the location of the marker. The SNP prevents a value from being detected.

For example, if a contract is signed under duress or fraud, it may be considered an absolute nullity, meaning that it is completely void and has no legal effect. Another example could be a marriage that is entered into by parties who are too closely related, which would be considered an absolute nullity.
