How much cash can I carry to Qatar? ›

Currency Import regulations

When bringing local currency (Qatar Riyal-QAR) and all other foreign currencies amounts equal to or higher than QAR 50,000 must be declared on arrival.

The official currency is the Qatari Rial. You can exchange USD for Qatari Rial at the airport, or withdraw cash from numerous ATMs. There are plenty of banks in Doha with ATM use for tourists as well.

If you are in Doha for 1 day/night only, budget approximately QAR 150-200 per person per night if you'll be paying for lunch / dinner from your own pocket. This can increase significantly if you wish to dine at fancy places; otherwise the budget can come down if you eat in some of the unknown places.

Duty-free Products

The total value of duty-free purchases cannot exceed QAR 3,000 (USD 825). Alcoholic beverages cannot be imported (bought duty-free on arriving at Doha, Qatar) under any condition.

As far as I remember during my travel through Doha, all dutyfree shops, shops at the food court and other cash transactions are done in local currency and USD. The card payment options differ from this, you can pay in your local currency.

Visa cards are widely accepted in Doha, however, small shops/restaurants and dhow boat cruise etc. may not take a card. Hence, as suggested by lordkimmage, it's always better to keep minimal cash. If you want to change currency, it's better you do it in the city.

The best currency to use in Qatar is the Qatari riyal. Bear in mind that (at time of writing), the maximum amount of cash you can take into the country is QAR50,000.

Members of a family residing in one household must declare if the members are collectively carrying over $10,000. If you and your wife are each carrying $6,000, you'd need to report that. Pocket change matters if you're close to the limit. Let's say you have exactly $10,000 in your carryon.
