Kratos' Backstory in God of War

Kratos is a Spartan warrior who Ares tricked into killing his wife and son. This incident earned him the nickname the "Ghost of Sparta," as he was cursed with wearing his family's ashes on his body, making his skin pale as a ghost.

While he wouldn't know it for most of his life, Kratos was a demigod as he is the son of Zeus, but he would later become a full-on god, the God of War to be precise, after killing Ares.

After years of serving the Greek gods, Kratos became disillusioned, and resentment towards the gods grew strong. After learning of the god's involvement in his mother's and brother's suffering, Kratos decided he had had enough and started a war against the Greek gods, resulting in many gods dying, including Zeus.

After getting his revenge, he fled the Greek World and went to the Northlands, where the 2018 God of War game takes place.

In this new world, he met a woman named Faye and had a kid with her — Atreus. After Faye dies, she tasks Kratos and their son with spraying her ashes on the highest peak in the Nine Realms.

The trip to the highest mountain was long and full of enemies, but in the end, Atreus learns that his mom was a giant, that his real name is Loki, and that he is a god just like his father.

Kratos' Role in God of War Ragnarok

Kratos' decisions in the last game seem to have accelerated Fumbelwinter — a devastating winter that forecasts Ragnarok's start.

During God of War Ragnarok, Kratos will still be burdened by his past mistakes and will want to spare Atreus from learning the things he learned from his conflict with the Greek gods. So he'll want to stay away from The Aesir as much as possible, which will be quite a challenge seeing as Atreus is hellbent on getting answers and knowing what being Loki means and his role in the upcoming war.

In this game, Kratos and Atreus will embark on a new adventure again. This time to prevent Ragnarok and save the lives of everyone in the Nine Realms.
