Have buyer send you pictures of the packaging and damage to item.
If you plan on filing a damage claim with the carrier, buyer needs to keep the item and packaging for inspection. Otherwise your claim is voided by a return. However, you still need to refund the buyer.
If you want the item returned, the easiest way is to tell the buyer to open a return request, you approve it, and ebay will send the buyer a link to print a return label.
Note, unless you packaged it well, or the carrier has noted the damaged, you likely will not win a claim.
You also could consider a partial refund, if acceptable to the buyer.
