IP Passthrough - How Does IP Passthrough Work (2024)

To have an IP Passthrough option on a Wi-Fi router from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) means that all the internet traffic is bridged through any device on the other end of the router (any device connected to the LAN port of the router LAN).

This is a very handy feature to have especially when there’s a device attached to the router and you wish to have the global IP address from WAN on the router. Through this setup, port forwarding becomes so much more convenient.

In simpler terms, IP Passthrough mode deactivates the functionality of the router and assigns the cellular WAN address straight to any of your desired devices connected to the router.

IP Passthrough setup in the router assigns or routes the IP address allocated by 4G/3G network to an inbuilt firewall (Juniper, Cisco, etc.), router, or computer. This mode is appropriate for any device that needs to directly get the WAN IP address.

It also arranges for Network Address and Port Translation (NAPT) or Port Address Translation (PAT) through the cellular network IP address. This 4G/3G IP address is also allotted and reused on a LAN computer.

An IP address is an alphanumeric address that acts as an identifier, as it is used to identify devices on the network. An IP address is used to send and share information online with other devices on the network. Websites, your ISP, and government agencies use your IP address to track your online activities. Your IP address also contains information about the location of your device.Organizations use private IP addresses in USAto restrict internet access for internal users, further strengthening security measures.

What is the IP Passthrough Mode?

IP passthrough is a setting in which your modem hand off your static IP address to some other equipment piece. Itoperates basically just like the bridge mode where users can utilize their own router behind the gateway provided by the ISP.

However, in the IP passthrough setting the signal is cut off (as compared to the bridge mode where the signal is not ended) at the gateway and enables the ISP to link with the gateway with its own IP address.

The internet traffic though will still pass through the gateway, and the public IP address given by the ISP will be assigned to the router of the user.

IP Passthrough Configuration – Step By Step

Here is how you can configure IP passthrough on AT&T and other routers:

  1. Open a browser on your PC that’s connected directly to the gateway.
  2. Paste https://192.168.1.254in the address bar.
  3. Choose the Firewall tab on the RG GUI page.
  4. Below the tab, choose IP passthrough.
  5. In case you’re prompted, insert the Device Access Code.
  6. From the drop-down menu of the Allocation Mode, choose the Passthrough option.
  7. Choose DHCPS-dynamicfrom the drop-down of passthrough.
  8. Tap on Saveand a reminder message will appear.
  9. Choose Restart Now and refresh the network.

What is a Bridge Mode?

Bridge mode is a configuration that enables the NAT featureon your modem and allows a router to function as a DHCP serverwithout any IP address conflicts. Connecting various routers would extend the coverage of Wi-Fi in your home.

The gateway provided by your ISP is a combination of a modem and a router. In some cases, instead of the router built in the gateway, users want to use their own router.

To get this setting, an ISP may set the gateway to a “bridge” mode, and routes the internet traffic via gateway without carrying out the routing task.

When you enable bridge mode, the router function (layer 3) is essentially disabled and the gateway function is converted to a modem (layer 2). Since you’re changing the gateway to a layer 2 device, a static IP address to your gateway can’t be assigned in bridge mode.

As no traffic is being filtered, the NAT feature can’t be utilized in a bridge mode setting. However, the DHCP server service offered in most bridge mode routers can still be used. Moreover, because you’re deactivating NAT on your gateway, you will not face a double NAT error with the personal router you may have linked with your gateway.

A double NAT issue arises when you have two systems needing to be present in the same LAN, but originating from two different subnetworks because of two routers. Perhaps, this is one of the main reasons why you may wish to set the gateway in bridge mode to elude the double NAT problem.

IP Passthrough – FAQs

Bridge mode does not cut off the traffic at the gateway. On the contrary, IP passthrough mode does terminate traffic at the gateway. For internet service providers to bypass the gateway, the bridge mode should be avoided and IP passthrough mode must be used.

No, IP passthrough isn’t recommended while gaming as enabling this mode on the modem will cause substantial lags while gaming. It is recommended to disable IP passthrough while gaming.

In layman’s terms, the IP Passthrough mode enables a device on the LAN to get the public IP address assigned to the router. It also offers PAT and NAPT through the same public IP for every host on the private LAN subset.

Conclusion

Both the bridge mode and IP passthrough modes perform the same function where all of the internet traffic is routed through the gateway and the public IP address is assigned to the router of the user operating behind the gateway.

In bridge mode, traffic is not terminated at the gateway, whereas, the traffic is terminated at the gateway in IP passthrough mode. For ISPs to link with the gateway, the IP passthrough setting should be used rather than the bridge mode.

IP Passthrough - How Does IP Passthrough Work (2024)

FAQs

IP Passthrough - How Does IP Passthrough Work? ›

How Does IP Passthrough Work? When IP Passthrough is enabled, the personal router takes on a more prominent role in the network setup. Instead of relying on the ISP's router for assigning IP addresses, the user's router directly interfaces with the ISP's modem, receiving a unique IP address.

Does IP passthrough disable WiFi? ›

Upon enabling IP passthrough: All Wi-Fi radios are automatically disabled (and re-enabled upon disabling IP passthrough).

What are the disadvantages of IP passthrough? ›

Disadvantages. When IP passthrough is enabled, your router essentially acts as a pass-through device, allowing any connected device to access the Internet directly. It disables your firewall and opens you to security risks.

What does passthrough mean on a router? ›

IP Passthrough on a router from an ISP means the router bridges all traffic through to whatever is on the other side (whatever device is connected to the routers LAN port). This is useful if you have a device connected to the router and you want the global IP address from WAN on the router.

Which is better, bridge mode or IP passthrough? ›

Bridge mode is commonly used to extend network coverage without creating separate subnets. Passthrough mode is often used when customers want to have their own router or firewall device and bypass the one provided by their ISP.

How does IP passthrough work? ›

IP Passthrough is a feature that allows a user's personal router to bypass the ISP's router and directly obtain the IP address from the Internet Service Provider. In simpler terms, it eliminates the double NAT scenario by enabling the user's devices to communicate directly with the ISP's network.

How does AT&T IP passthrough work? ›

The IP Passthrough feature allows a single PC on the LAN to have the Router's public address assigned to it. It also provides Port Address Translation (PAT)–Network Address Port Translation (NAPT) via the same public IP address for all other hosts on the private LAN subnet.

Is IP passthrough secure? ›

Advantage. IPsec Passthrough allows secure IP connections over routers using NAT before any information is transferred.

What is a passthrough connection? ›

Pass-through is a process that runs on a server and establishes connections between the users and servers connected to that server and other servers. Pass-through connections use an intermediary server as a "stepping stone" to connect the two servers.

Is cellular WIFI passthrough safe? ›

Is IP passthrough safe? IP passthrough itself is a safe feature to use, as it simply allows for transparent communication between devices on a local network and the internet.

Should I disable IPsec passthrough? ›

Without IPsec Passthrough enabled, your traffic will be blocked if firewall restrictions are in place. This is not an issue if you have a modern router, but it can be an issue if you have an outdated router.

What is IP passthrough bridge mode? ›

IP pass-through works essentially the same as the bridged mode where customer can use their own router behind the ISP-provided gateway. However, in IP pass-through mode the signal is terminated (bridge mode signal is not terminated) at the gateway and allows the ISP to connect to the gateway with its own IP.

How does a router decide which line to transmit on? ›

How does it decide? The router has a forwarding table that helps it pick the next path based on the destination IP address. That table does not have a row for every possible IP address; there are ‍ possible IP addresses, and that's far too much to store. Instead, the table has rows for IP address prefixes.

Is it worth putting router in bridge mode? ›

Some devices may connect to one router, while others connect to the second router. The bridge mode-enabled router will eliminate this error and connect to one router while the other extends its coverage. Both routers will share the same Internet Protocol (IP) address, and only one of them will perform NAT processes.

Do I need an IP passthrough AT&T? ›

IP Passthrough is not required for general Internet usage. However, if you don't use it, you will be double NATed. This isn't necessarily the end of the world, but it can make port forwarding and UPnP not work right. Either way you go, you want to make sure you don't use the same subnet in more than one location.

Which is better DHCP or bridge mode? ›

Is it recommended to enable DHCP in bridge mode? In most cases, DHCP should be enabled for bridge mode. DHCP allows devices connected to the secondary router to obtain IP addresses automatically from the primary router's DHCP server, ensuring proper network configuration and communication.

Does IP address affect Wi-Fi connection? ›

IP Address Conflicts Will Result in “No Internet”

For computers to communicate with each other over the network, they must have a legitimate IP address. Suppose your WiFi is connected but no internet connection. In that case, the first and most obvious reason is that another PC or device has used your IP address.

Does IP passthrough disable the firewall? ›

Placing a device in passthrough mode will remove firewall protection provided by the AT&T gateway. When a device is configured in passthrough mode, it will be assigned a WAN IP instead of a LAN IP. Other devices connected to your gateway may no longer be able to share files with the device in passthrough mode.

Is there a way to bypass Wi-Fi restrictions? ›

You can bypass Wi-Fi restrictions by using services like a VPN, Tor, and proxy. They obfuscate the websites and services you want to access. This way, the Wi-Fi firewall doesn't know what to block.
