Pokemon Go introduced XL Candy at the end of 2020. XL Candy is different from regular Candy in that it is able to level up your Pokemon past Level 40. XL Candy is much rarer to receive. We will go through the different methods to obtain XL Candy.
You need to be Trainer Level 31 before you can gather XL Candy.

There are quite a lot of different methods for gathering XL Candy. Some are more difficult than others, but as long as you are Trainer Level 31, you should be able to gradually collect them to power up your Pokemon later on.

The different methods are:
- Catching Pokemon. This will vary depending on the species of Pokemon, but catching wild evolved forms of Pokemon will guarantee XL Candy. Basic Pokemon are able to provide XL Candy when caught, but it is not assured.
- Transferring Pokemon. When transferring Pokemon, there will be a chance for it to leave behind an XL Candy with its regular Candy. Just because you earned an XL Candy from catching the specific Pokemon does not mean you will be granted an XL Candy from its transfer.
- Raids. Pokemon Caught in Raids will guarantee an XL Candy. It can be any Raid, so do not hesitate to take on the lower CP Raid Pokemon alone.
- Hatching Eggs. The number of XL Candy received will be higher, when hatching eggs that require more walking. For example, 1km eggs will grant one XL Candy, while 12km eggs will grant four XL Candy.
- Trading Pokemon. Sometimes, when trading Pokemon with another player, you will earn an XL Candy. This is one of the least effective ways, but it is still a nice surprise you may get an XL Candy from trading.
- Walking Buddies. When walking your Buddy Pokemon, you will earn Candy dependent on its species per a certain number of km. Occasionally, you may collect an XL Candy alongside the regular Candy.
- Conversion Exchange. When opening up the options on a specific Pokemon, you can convert its regular Candy into XL Candy. 100 regular Candy are required for one XL Candy.
