If draining problems with your front-loading washing machine coincide with an unexpected lack of change, the coins you're missing are probably stuck in the washer's drainage pump. They may not have even made it that far – they may be stuck in the drain filter or coin trap. Wherever they are, they are just the right size to block the washer drain. Washing machine manufacturers usually design their products to make coins easy to remove; the procedure involves minimal disassembly, and you may have to remove the drainage pump, which is easier to do than it sounds.

  1. 1.

Unplug the washer to avoid getting a shock while you look for the coins.

  2. 2.

Look for a coin trap panel. If your washer has a coin trap, you will see a small, square panel near the floor on the front or side of the machine. Open the door and remove the trap by turning it counterclockwise and pulling. The contents of the trap may surprise you. Remove them.

  3. 3.

Locate the drain pump by referring to the owner's manual for your machine, available on the manufacturer's website, if you don't see a coin trap, advises Appliance Aid. It is often near the front of the machine, at the bottom, but it may also be near the rear, depending on the model. If it's at the front, you must remove the front panel to access it. If it's at the rear, you must remove the rear panel.

  4. 4.

Remove the front access panel of the washer. On some models, this panel covers the entire front of the machine from the bottom of the door to the floor, and you can either pull it off or unscrew the screws holding it with a screwdriver. On newer machines, you must remove the door seal, disconnect the electrical connection to the door and remove the detergent tray and control panel in order to gain access to the screws. Unscrew them to remove the panel.

  5. 5.

Move the machine away from the wall to remove the rear panel if the pump is at the rear of the machine. Unscrew the screws holding the panel with a screwdriver and lift the panel off. You may have to disconnect the drain hose in order to remove the panel. If your pump sits at the front of the machine, skip to Step 6.

  6. 6.

Disconnect the electrical connector to the pump by pulling it out; remove the two hoses attached to the pump by squeezing the clamps holding them with pliers and pulling them off. Have an empty bucket ready to catch water.

  7. 7.

Unhook the pump from the machine. You may be able to do this by pushing a tab, or you may have to unscrew one or two screws. Remove the pump and turn it over. Any coins stuck inside should fall out. If you can see coins inside, but they don't come out, pry them out with a piece of stiff wire. A straightened-out clothes hanger works best, as you can bend it as needed to reach the coins.

  8. 8.

Shake the drain hoses to make sure no coins are stuck inside, instructs Appliance Parts Experts. If there is one, it should fall out.

  9. 9.

Replace the pump and hoses and push the electrical connector back into its socket. Replace the front or rear access panel, reversing the procedure you used to take it off. Plug the machine back into the outlet.

    Things You Will Need

    • Screwdriver

    • Pliers

    • Bucket

    • Clothes hanger

    Tip

If your machine has a coin catcher, it probably also has a filter for the drain pump located inside the same access door. Pull it out and check it when you check the coin catcher.

If you can hear clattering when the tumbler turns, the coins are still inside the tumbler. Even though they may be hard to see, you should be able to retrieve them through the loading door.

    Warning

When working on the washer, never work on it with it plugged in.
