Maybe some of us can’t travel internationally or even in our own country because of expensive travel insurance! Yes, as we all know, if we have a pre-condition (illness) the cost of travel insurance is so high, traveling anywhere but our own province is out of the question. For those of you who can – good on you. For the rest of us let’s come up with an alternative plan

Why travel medical insurance is important for Canadians

First of all we need to understand that in Canada, having travel insurance is essential, because it can provide us with peace of mind and financial protection in case of the unexpected happening.

From medical emergencies and trip cancellations to lost baggage and flight delays, travel insurance is designed to safeguard you from a range of unfortunate events while you’re away from home. Even RVers should be looking at suitable travel insurance!

If you have made reservations, plans and bought tickets for various events and you have to cancel due to illness or something significant – wouldn’t it be helpful if you have travel insurance?

It ensures that you’re not left with hefty medical bills or facing the hassle of rebooking or replacing stolen belongings. Travel insurance in Canada is especially crucial due to the high cost of healthcare and other travel-related expenses.

By having the right coverage, you can enjoy your trip without worrying about any unforeseen mishaps. Whether you”re traveling within Canada or heading south in your RV, having travel insurance should be at the top of your checklist.

Do you need Travel Insurance if you stay in Canada?

Sorry, but the answer is yes. It’s necessary to have travel medical insurance if you’re planning on staying in Canada but not necessarily your own province.

That may come as a surprise to you, but if you become sick or have a major injury in another province than your own, your provincial medical may not cover everything.

For example, in British Columbia there are set limits to what BC Medical will pay for certain procedures. That’s it – that’s all they will pay. So, if you end up in a hospital in Ontario and the hospital charges more than what the BC health care will pay – you must pay the difference! That information quite often comes as a major surprise to Canadian RV travellers.

Yes, you’ll be responsible for paying the difference between what BC Medical will pay and what the hospital charges in the visiting province. So, what’s the answer beyond paying for that expensive travel insurance?

For now, why not travel within your own province? We really are fortunate to live in a big, beautiful country with so much to see and do. Our geography alone is outstanding!

How to Enjoy our own Country

From the west coast and across the country to the Atlantic Shore or by veering north into the territories we have unlimited potential for things to see and do, no matter our interests. Canadian history is colourful, our culture is diversified, our scenery is spectacular, wildlife is plentiful and on any given day we should never run out of things to participate in.

Imagine, if you can, the Pacific West Coast with its rugged terrain, breathtaking scenery, and unlimited potential opportunities for almost every kind of recreational activity you can think of. If you’re interested in scuba diving, golfing, fishing, hiking, skiing, and cycling, you can do it. That’s just the start of it – there’s so much more!

That’s BC – what about your home province? I know if you take the time to look around there’s so much to see and do, you’ll be able to create a long list for you to enjoy. What major events will be taking place in your province that you can take your RV to and enjoy? Do you enjoy sports activities, music festivals, museums, or organizing family times. Think of all the wonderful and fun things you can do if you start planning.

Conclusion: You Don't Need Expensive Travel Insurance

My advice is if travel medical insurance currently makes it prohibitive for you to become a snowbird, travel within Canada, or to lay on the beaches in Mexico, then look closer to home. I doubt you’ll be disappointed. The most important thing is for you not to give up and quit traveling because you do have options.

Remember, if you’re traveling in your own home province it’s not necessary to get extra travel insurance. You’re already insured!

Each province has their own requirements for being out of the province and keeping your medical active. Read more here..
