How does the SmartScore work? ›

With the SmartScore, the learning process is rewarded and your students are constantly reassessed. When a student starts practicing a skill, the SmartScore starts at 0. As the student answers questions correctly, the SmartScore increases. If a question is answered incorrectly, the score decreases.

It increases as students answer questions correctly, and decreases as students answer questions incorrectly. A SmartScore of 80 indicates proficiency in a skill, and a SmartScore of 100 indicates mastery. IXL recommends that students aim to reach proficiency in at least two skills per week (SP/ week; An et al., 2022).

Students will need to answer as many as 10 questions correctly in a row to achieve mastery. For most skills on IXL, students will have to complete a minimum of 28 questions to earn a SmartScore of 100. When a student achieves a score of 100 on IXL, you can feel confident that they have truly mastered that skill.

It's calculated based on question difficulty, answer accuracy, and consistency. When your child is getting the hang of the concept, their SmartScore will increase, and their questions will get harder. When your child gets a question wrong, their SmartScore will drop, and they will get easier questions.

For example, a score of 650 indicates that the student has acquired about 50% of 6th-grade material, whereas a score of 700 indicates that the student is ready to learn 7th-grade material.

One major drawback of IXL is its emphasis on repetitive practice rather than fostering deep understanding. The program often focuses on isolated skills without providing real-world context or opportunities for critical thinking.

Infinite! There are over 8,500 skills and unlimited computer-generated questions, so there's always fresh and compelling content! With IXL's unique scoring algorithm, questions adapt to the student's skill level to ensure the student is constantly challenged and engaged.

The program only grades students based on correct answers. According to CommonSense Media, parents have even gone as far as to review IXL, saying that the scoring system harshly punishes mistakes and leads to a ton of stress instead of academic comprehension.

While the points, awards, and rewards do help with motivation, it's unlikely you'll have students clamoring to use IXL, and the point system can be punitive when students get an answer wrong. However, IXL's breadth of content and targeted practice cover a lot of ground and help teachers differentiate more effectively.

Overall levels are provided to parents to help track student growth. The overall level comes in a score such as 540, which would mean the student has mastered 40% of grade 5 math skills. Normal year to year progress is 100 points.

These levels range from 0-1300, with 0-50 representing pre-K, 50-100 kindergarten, and 1300 representing the end of 12th grade.

So a level of 400 represents a readiness to start working on 4th-grade skills, and a level of 450 means the student is about halfway through the 4th-grade curriculum. The two exceptions to this are preschool and kindergarten, which are represented by diagnostic levels of 0-50 and 50-100, respectively.
