Antenna pole, if needed, must be purchased separately.

What is Helium Miner Network?

The Helium network is popularly known as the People's Network. It is a public distributed network of Hotspots that creates global, long-range wireless coverage. This network is then used by IoT (Internet of Things) devices that are LoRaWAN enabled. As a Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) networking protocol, LoRa WAN has been designed to connect "things" that are battery operated to the internet wirelessly.

The Helium blockchain's native cryptocurrency is $HNT and the Helium hotspots produce and are compensated in $HNT. The Helium blockchain is a new, open source, and public blockchain that has been created to incentivize the creation of decentralized, physical wireless networks.

The Helium blockchain currently consists of tens of thousands of Hotspots, providing access to the biggest LoRaWAN Network globally.

What is Helium Blockchain?

The Helium Blockchain is new and has been built from scratch to incentivize the creation of public, decentralized wireless networks.

The Helium Blockchain is based on a new, innovative work algorithm that known as Proof of Coverage. It rewards miners in the Helium blockchain's native token, $HNT. The Helium Blockchain was launched officially on July 29, 2019, and now runs on more than 10,000 Helium Miners globally. It powers the biggest decentralized public LoRaWAN Network in the world.

Why Mine $HNT?

The Helium network, also known as the People’s Network, consists of hotspots that create long-range wireless coverage for inexpensive and very low power IoT devices. The hotspots are rewarded on $HNT for helping create the network.

The world is fast becoming decentralized. Numerous services, technologies, and platforms are moving to open decentralized systems from proprietary centralized ones. The way for crypto-currencies and blockchain networks to be built has been paved by peer-to-peer networks like BitTorrent and Napster. Blockchain networks including Ethereum, Bitcoin, and others have demonstrated the value of decentralized transaction ledgers.

Existing Internet services such as the domain name system, identity verification, and file storage are being replaced by modern versions based on blockchain. Although software-level decentralization has moved very fast, physical networks take longer to be established. These networks are more complex to decentralize as they often need specialized hardware to function.

The Helium network is a protocol token, a blockchain, and a wide-area wireless networking system. The blockchain runs on a new consensus protocol, known as the Helium Consensus Protocol, and a new type of proof, known as Proof-of-Coverage. The Miners provide wireless network coverage in a time and physical location that are cryptographically verified and then submit proofs to the Helium network. The Miners that submit the best proofs are elected to a consensus group that is asynchronous byzantine fault tolerant at a fixed epoch.

Consensus group members receive encrypted transactions that other Miners submit and use very high transaction rates to compile them into blocks. Apart from the blockchain protocol, WHIP, the Helium Wireless protocol, provides two way data transfer between the Internet and wireless Devices via a network of independent providers that don’t rely on a single coordinator.

  • Miners earn fees for validating the Helium network’s integrity and from transactions.
  • Miners that provide network coverage also earn tokens.
  • Devices pay to geolocate themselves and send data to and from the Internet.

Helium Network System Overview.

  • The Helium network is a wireless decentralized network that has been built on a purpose-built blockchain around WHIP and uses a native token.
  • Devices consist of hardware that contains a radio chip and firmware that is WHIP compatible. They pay Miners in tokens to send data to and from the Internet.
  • Miners can earn tokens when they provide wireless network coverage via specialized hardware components that provide a bridge between Routers and WHIP.
  • Devices store their public keys in the blockchain, while their private keys are stored in specialized hardware.
  • Miners join the network when they assert their location, derived by satellite. This is a special kind of blockchain transaction. Miners also stake a token deposit.
  • Miners stipulate the price they will accept for Proof-of-Location and data transport services, while Routers specify the price they are willing to pay for data for their Device. Miners get paid once they have proven that they have delivered data to the Router specified by the Device.
  • When Miners are elected to a consensus group which is asynchronous byzantine fault tolerant, they can participate in creating new blocks in the blockchain.
  • While Miners are part of a consensus group, they are rewarded with tokens for blocks they create.
  • The probability of a Miner to be elected to a consensus group is based on the wireless network coverage’s quality.
  • The blockchain uses Proof-of-Coverage to verify that Miners are in fact representing the wireless network coverage they create.

Helium Network Participants.

There are three types of participants in the Helium network - Devices, Miners, and Routers.

Devices.

Devices use WHIP compatible hardware to send encrypted data to and from the Internet. Device data is fingerprinted with the fingerprint being stored on the blockchain. The wireless network coverage to the Helium network is provided by Miners using purpose-built hardware known as Hotspots. These provide a long-range bridge between the Internet and WHIP devices. Users can join the Helium network as Miners by purchasing a Hotspot that is WHIP compatible and staking a token deposit which is proportional to the density of Miners in the area.

Miners.

Miners take part in the Proof-of-Coverage process to prove that they provide wireless network coverage continuously that Devices are able to use. Miners join the Helium network with a score that will decline if blocks pass without valid proof being submitted. A new group of Miners is elected to a consensus group at an epoch. This group mines new blockchain blocks and is paid the block reward as well as transaction fees for all transactions included in the blocks that they have mined. If a Miner's score drops, the probability of them being elected to a consensus group declines.

Routers.

Routers are Internet applications that buy encrypted data from Miners for their Devices. In areas with enough Miners, a Router can pay several Miners to get enough copies of a packet to geolocate Devices without having to use satellite location hardware. This is known as Proof-of-Location. Routers are the endpoint for Device data encryption. Devices write on the blockchain to which Routers a specific Miner should send their data. Any Helium network Hotspot can send data for any Device to the correct Router. Routers are responsible to confirm to Hotspots that Device data was delivered to the right destination. This serves as confirmation that the Miner should be paid for their services.

How to Get Started as a Miner?

An internet connection and a Hotspot device are all that are required for you to start Helium mining.

Simply download the mobile application to your phone and activate your hotspot. Once activated, the hotspot will begin transferring device data and this will earn you HNT.

Before you buy a Hotspot miner, you need to specify the frequency of your country. Every continent has its own frequency. If you don’t know your country’s frequency check LoRaWAN Frequency Plans and Regulations by Country.

There's a wide variety of Helium hotspot miners available to purchase. With the massive increase in the popularity of the Helium network, the number of online scams has however also unfortunately increased.

When you are ready to buy your Helium hotspot, make sure you buy it from an authorized Helium manufacturer.

The fake websites listed below should be avoided at all costs when you shop for your Helium miner:

Maximizing your Earning Potential.

The bigger the area your hotspot covers, the greater your earning potential. Obstacles such as walls and windows, as well as terrain and other buildings in the area, can have a negative effect on your miner's coverage. This product listing of ultra directional antenna that is narrowband to cover only Helium network frequencies can help achieve best coverage.

There are two things you can do in this regard to maximize your profits: Placing your hotspot correctly and using a high dBi (gain) antenna such as the one sold at this product listing.

Placing your Hotspot.

It is recommended that a hotspot is placed as high as possible and in a clear line of sight to other hotspots. If your location is on a hill or mountain, you're in good shape. Putting this highly directional antenna for your hotspot on a roof or on a high mast will also elevate it and improve your coverage.

Elevating the hotspot gives it the potential to reach other miners in a 12.5 mile (15 km) radius or even farther.

Antenna Gain (dBi).

Antenna is an essential component of a Helium Hotspot that transfers signals between the devices. The higher the dBi or gain of the antenna is, the longer and more narrow its signal coverage gets. An exterior antenna like this dish shaped metallic grid antenna with horn that can be focussed towards the signal source can help in some situations more than an attached stock whip antenna that comes with the modem. This outside can provide additional 12 to 17 dB Gain by capturing signals from outside where they are strongest and injecting them indoors to the modem via low loss coax cable.

Is Helium Mining Risky?

Yes, it is risky. Helium is a start-up network that competes with telecommunication companies that are already well-established. It can either flop like many other start-ups out there, or be the next big thing that rewards its investors greatly. You should invest based on your financial situation. Never invest what you can't afford to lose.

FAQs

What is the range of the Helium miner antenna? ›

It could reach 50 kilometers if both ends are high (this antenna, and the signal source antenna) and cable losses are low. Meaning if this antenna is installed high up at least 10-15 meters, and using high grade low signal loss cable under 30 feet long or whatever that keeps the cable losses below 2 dB.

What frequency is the Helium miner antenna? ›

It comes supplied with a male dual band RP-SMA LoRa dipole antenna that is suitable for the 868 and 915 MHz frequency bands. This means it can be used both in the US (915 MHz) and Europe (868 MHz).

What is the best antenna for Helium mining? ›

If you're looking for a discrete, low-budget antenna that you can place either indoors or outdoors, go with the Panorama B4be-Helium. You'll enjoy the easy mounting and unobtrusive design paired with an amazing price. For the highest performance omnidirectional antenna, consider the SIRIO SCO-868-6.

What are the disadvantages of helium network? ›

Disadvantages of Helium Network

The network may not work well if there are not enough hotspots in an area. Limited bandwidth: Helium's network uses a low-bandwidth protocol called LoRaWAN, designed to be energy-efficient but may not be suitable for applications requiring high-bandwidth connections.

Which dBi antenna is best? ›

A medium gain antenna (6.6, 5.1 dBi) has a more rounded, wider pattern than a high gain antenna. This means the signal is less likely to be obstructed by obstacles such as buildings, trees or mountains. These factors make a medium gain antenna the best choice for those in suburban areas and the country side.

What dBi antenna do I need for Helium miner? ›

For most environments we recommend 5.8 or 8 dbi as they provides a good tradeoff between signal gain and vertical beamwidth. As the gain of an antenna increases, its vertical path gets more narrow (this is the angle at which it can transmit and receive).

Where should a helium miner antenna be placed? ›

You may be thinking, “I'll never get my antenna 120′ high.” That's OK, do the best you can, but know that until you get it high, you'll be missing out on earnings. A good rule of thumb to start approaching 90% of optimum earnings is at least 20′ above your roof and surrounding roofs.

How much bandwidth does helium need? ›

Power over Ethernet is fully supported. How fast does my internet connection need to be to optimize coverage and experience for mobile users? We recommend a minimum speed of 220 Mbps downlink and 12 Mbps uplink. The Helium Mobile Hotspot must be plugged into a wired Ethernet internet connection capable of these speeds.

How do you increase helium mining earnings? ›

Antenna placement

Getting your antenna outside and up high is critical to achieving maximum earnings. Everyone has seen the stock photos of an HNT miner sitting on a window sill with a stock antenna. Forget about that ! It's purely marketing and earnings will only be a fraction of what they could be.

How can I improve my helium miner? ›

CORRECTLY SIZE YOUR ANTENNA — Most of the time a low gain (4 dBi or lower) will give you the best earning coverage. Higher gain antennas may *seem* like they should be better. They're usually not. USE LOW LOSS CABLES — Most antennas that ship with cables use the cheapest cable possible.

What is the best distance between helium miners? ›

You can operate multiple Helium miners, as long as they aren't in the same place – if they are too close to one another, their earning capabilities are severely limited. You want them to be 300 feet or more apart.

What is the helium controversy? ›

Helium was touted as the best real-world use case of Web3 technology. But as it struggles to generate revenue, a Forbes investigation found that executives and their friends quietly hoarded the majority of wealth at the project's inception.

Is helium mining worth it? ›

Yes, Helium mining could be a profitable option for miners in 2024, potentially offering over 800% ROI. However, keep in mind that these returns are speculative and depend on various market and network conditions.

Does the Helium network have a future? ›

Looking even further into the future, by 2050, HNT could potentially reach a price of $160. This long-term HNT crypto price prediction considers the continued development of the Helium network, its expanding use cases, and the overall growth of the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry.

How far do Helium hotspots reach? ›

The Helium Mobile Hotspot is similar to a traditional Wi-Fi router regarding its coverage capabilities. The Hotspot can typically cover roughly 1,500 square feet, depending on its installed environment.
