Handy features for webtoons “New features of Clip Studio Paint #20” by ClipStudioOfficial - Make better art | CLIP STUDIO TIPS (2024)

Supported from Clip Studio Paint Ver. 1.10.5

Creating webtoons has never been easier

Webtoon has been added to Purpose in the File menu > New dialog box. You can now choose a webtoon canvas from the list of presets.

Webtoon page settings (EX)

In the EX version, you can use the Story settings to manage multiple pages by changing the number of divisions, pages, and other settings.

  • Number of page divisions: A multipage work will be made by dividing the canvas height by the specified number of divisions.
  • Number of pages: A multi-page work will be made by adding the specified number of canvases with the specified height.

The webtoon Page Manager (EX)

Multi-page webtoon works are optimized for vertical scrolling, not for page-by-page viewing. If there is enough width to display two or more columns, they will be displayed from left to right.

You can also reverse the display direction from Story > Webtoon reading direction.

If you turn on View > Fit to Navigator, it will be displayed vertically, making it easier to grasp the entire webtoon when it is published.

For more details about the Page Manager window, see the tutorial below.

Preview your webtoon on your canvas with the On-screen area (webtoon)

By turning on View > On-screen area (webtoon), you can check how the canvas looks with smartphone screen ratios.

You can change the ratio toggle and whether to Fill outside the webtoon view area from “On-screen area settings (webtoon).”

Preview your works in progress on your smartphone (ver. 1.12.0)

Use the Webtoon preview feature on Companion mode to see how your webtoon will look on the smartphone as you’re working on it. Edit your work in real-time on a device similar to what your readers will view your webtoon on.

Learn more about Companion mode below.

While connected via Companion mode tap the button to switch Webtoon preview mode to see a preview of the canvas you’re working on on your main computer or tablet device on your smartphone.

Multi-page projects are scaled to fit the screen and all pages can be scrolled through at once.

Not just limited to webtoons, this feature can be used to preview illustrations and multi-page comics on your smartphone. Multi-page comics are displayed in the same way as webtoons, in a vertical scrolling style. Even if you are only working on a single page on your main device you can scroll through and preview all pages in the project.

Preview all pages of your work on Clip Studio Paint even if you currently have only a single page of the project open.

Extending and cropping a Webtoon canvas in Ver. 2.0 (EX)

[Change canvas height] allows you to extend or crop the canvas. This can be used when you want to add new frames between frames in a webtoon, or when you want to cut frames that are no longer needed.

Select [Edit] menu > [Change canvas height] > [Extend canvas] / [Crop canvas] to open the Extend canvas dialog. Here you can set numerical vales for [Start point] and [Height].

The position can also be adjusted by moving the frame shown on the canvas.

[Extend canvas] is indicated by a blue frame, and [Crop canvas] by a red frame.

[Change canvas height] works differently depending on the layer type.

For raster, vector, selection, or quick mask layers, [Extend canvas] / [Crop canvas] will apply to the selected area.

[Extend canvas]

[Crop canvas]

For gradient layers

If the [Change canvas height] border is between the start and end points of a gradient, the end point will be moved by the amount set in [Extend canvas] / [Crop canvas].

For frame border folders

If the [Change canvas height] border is on the frame border, the frame height will extend or shrink by the amount set in [Extend canvas]/[Crop canvas].

[Crop canvas]

For image materials, text, balloons, rulers, file object, Speed lines, and focus lines layers

[Extend canvas] will not split or move the bounding box even its starting point crosses over these, even slightly.

[Crop canvas] will not delete a bounding box even if its starting point crosses over these, even slightly.

If the starting point of the [Extend canvas] / [Crop canvas] rectangle bounding box is covered by a part of the layer, it will be moved up and down with [Extend canvas] / [Crop canvas].

Note: Some figures, such as sparse focus lines, have a bounding box that consists of the entire canvas. In this case, [Extend canvas] / [Crop canvas] may not result in any change in its appearance.

・For fill, Tonal Correction, 3D, and old 3D layers (excluding mobile version)

The layer itself will not change in any way.

However, for masks assigned to layers, a blank space will be inserted when [Extend canvas] is selected.

Splitting and exporting with Export webtoon

In the Export webtoon dialog, you can export a vertically long canvas webtoon by dividing it into multiple image files.

You can specify the height of each image when exporting.

Exporting a 20,000px file by dividing into 3000px-high pages.

These settings can be changed from File > Export webtoon.

By checking File export settings > Divide vertically, you can split and export the image by a set number of pixels.

When exporting a multipage file in the EX version, you can select from the following three settings.

  • Export pages separately
  • Export as one continuous page
  • Divide vertically

If you Divide vertically for a multipage file, the page will be merged and then divided.

Dividing and exporting a 5 page file into 4 files

Posting webtoons on Clip Studio SHARE

Webtoons exported in general image formats (.jpg, .png, etc.) can be uploaded from your browser. You can load multiple image files and upload them as one file.

Clip Studio SHARE

From Ver 1.10.5, you can export and publish Webtoon files (.clip, .cmc) directly from Clip Studio to Clip Studio SHARE.

  • Only one .clip file at a time is supported.

From the Clip Studio SHARE screen: Publish your story > Upload from Clip Studio > Upload a story > Upload a webtoon.
