GoFundMe Review (2024)

GoFundMe, one of the more flexible crowdfunding sites, requires no deadlines or minimum goals in order to receive a payout. This puts GoFundMe in a camp with Indiegogoand FundAnything, both of which offer flexible funding, and sets it apart from Kickstarter, which only pays out to fully funded campaigns. Like FundAnything, GoFundMe also lets you raise money for whatever you want, from covering medical expenses to funding a local sports team. Like Indiegogo, GoFundMe also has a charitable arm, which you can use to raise money for a nonprofit organization. For personal causes, particularly emergencies where you need funding ASAP, GoFundMe is fine. However, if you're looking to fund a creative endeavor, Kickstarter, our Editors' Choice for crowdfunding services, has a more thorough help section and specific tips for successful campaigns.

Fees, Restrictions, and Requirements
Like Kickstarterand Patreon, GoFundMe takes five percent of every donation and passes along payment processing fees from a third-party service. GoFundMe uses WePay to handle your funding, which takes 2.9 percent plus 30-cents for each payment. International fees vary based on location. If you use GoFundMe for charitable purposes, it takes five percent per donation, while its partner, FirstGiving, takes 4.25 percent per donation. I'd recommend using Indiegogo instead, as it waives its fee for charitable projects and only passes on payment processing fees.

As I said, GoFundMe lets users raise money for personal causes in addition to creative pursuits, though it's primarily used for the former. Its restrictions are standard: no p*rnography, graphic content, hate speech, gambling or illegal activities. Otherwise, GoFundMe is very flexible and has no formal approval process like Kickstarter does. In fact, I was able to publish a campaign with a description that was entirely lorem ipsum text.

GoFundMe Review (1)GoFundMe Setup

Creatinga Fundraising Campaign
GoFundMe's website has an understated design, and is easy to use, compared with FundAnything's outdated clunky interface. Like Kickstarter and Patreon, GoFundMe lets you either sign up using your email address orFacebook. GoFundMe's U.S. fees are laid out on the sign-up page, which is nice. Once you set up a login, GoFundMe wastes no time asking for your monetary goal, as well as a project name, zip code, and color scheme of choice. An accompanying photo is required, as is an in-depth description of your project or cause. You can also optionally add a Facebook photo of yourself to prove you're a real person.

GoFundMe recommends uploading a video explaining your cause, as well as high-quality photos. Then you can invite your contacts from Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail, or manually enter email addresses. Each campaign has a unique, shortened URL that you can customize to better remember and share it in emails, texts, and on social media. GoFundMe offers a checklist of tips to create a successful campaign, including providing lots of detail in your story. Once your campaign is live, you can post updates to the page.

You must use two-factor authentication in order to withdraw funds from GoFundMe. After you verify your mobile number and your email address, you have to set up an account with WePay, GoFundMe's payment processing partner. Then you need to verify your identity, with your legal name and address, date of birth, phone number and social security number. I didn't like sharing my entire number; Kickstarter only asks for the last four digits.

GoFundMe Review (8)GoFundMe Story

Rewards are optional in GoFundMe, unlike Kickstarter which requires them. Like Kickstarter, though, GoFundMe lets you set rewards at certain donation levels and limit quantities. You can also set up a wish list of items you need as part of your larger goal. For example, if you're raising money for a trip, you might put a camera on your wish list.

Tracking and Promoting Your Campaign
Once your campaign is live, you can track its progress by clicking the More icon and choosing Donations from the drop-down menu. You can also add offline donations if you receive any payments in person. Each donation has its own entry, with the donor's name, amount, and a timestamp. A Say Thanks icon lets you send a donor a thank you email, or post a message to Facebook. GoFundMe also notifies you by email whenever you receive a new donation. In the Donations section, you can also see comments and a history of your update posts. Oddly, there's no chart showing how close you are to your goal, something that most competitors, including Kickstarter and Patreon, offer. You can only see your progress on the campaign page, which shows the amount raised and the goal, alongside a progress indicator.

GoFundMe Review (9)GoFundMe Donations

GoFundMe promotes social sharing in a few ways. Just under the campaign page's Donate Now icon is a Facebook share icon. If you link your account to Facebook, you can set up daily campaign updates to your profile and ask close Facebook friends to share your campaign page. You can also connect GoFundMe with your Twitter account. You can even print out a campaign sign for posting at local businesses.

Your dashboard, which is easy to find, provides top-line information, including how much you've raised toward you goal. Click the Show Campaign Activity button, and you can see more detail about donations, visits to your campaign, and social media statistics.

GoFundMe Review (10)GoFundMe Dashboard

An EasyRoute toPersonal Funding
GoFundMe is a solidresource for subsidizing personal causes such as medical expenses, tuition, or even a dream vacation. It requires no funding minimum or deadlines, so you can collect funds whether you've reached your goal or not. With excellent social media integration and easy setup and tracking features, it's afine crowdfunding service. For creative endeavors, you're better off trying out the Editors' Choice Kickstarter, which offers more guidance. If you'd rather not worry about fully funding a goal, take a look at Indiegogo or Patreon.
