Today’s Feature Friday is about Darren, a former police officer who quit his job to try his hand at entrepreneurship. He reminds me of Rosemarie Groner who is a well-known budgeting blogger who was a state trooper for almost a decade before she quit her job.

Darren and his wife quit their jobs, sold their house, and bought a 16 unit apartment building in preparation for starting two businesses. They also had a child at this time.

The crazy thing about this story is that Darren quit before making any money on his sites! His story is reminiscent of Bobby from Millennial Money Man who quit his job before making money and is now making upwards of six figures per year.

Good luck to Darren! I look forward to reading about his future success.

What is your business?

I quit my job as a police officer 6 months ago to pursue my online business Money Trekkerand build up my rental property portfolio (I purchased a 16 unit apartment building before I quit the force). Before the police force I was in the Canadian Navy.

What did you do before you started your own business?

I was a police officer for 8 years and before that I was in the military for 6 years. I just started my personal finance blog called moneytrekker(dot)com where I plan on monetizing the site and inspiring others to do the same and live the dotcom lifestyle.

Who were some influencers in your decision to leave the police force tobe an entrepreneur?

Tim Ferriss, Melyssa Griffin, Michele Schroeder-Gardner, Grant Cardone, Tai Lopez

How did you prepare to quit your job as a police officer both financially and in your business?

I sold my principal residence myself the end of last year and took home $178,193.81 in equity. I then invested in a 16 unit apartment building with my brother and started my online business(es)…Money Trekkerand theviveur.com….I’m currently focusing on money trekker as the topic of money interests me the most. Six years ago I was 25k in debt.

Were you already making money on the side before you decided to quit your job?

I wasn’t already making money before I quit my job. I took a leap of faith. Some called me crazy. I was scared then and I’m still scared now but I’m moving forward daily without looking back and not letting fear disable me.

Who else works on your business with you? Did you hire anyone to help? When did you decide to bring that person on and how did you find them?

I haven’t hired anyone. My brother helps here and there with theviveur.com but I’m working on my own for now.

Can you share any financial details about your business?

I haven’t made any money yet from my blog (money trekker) and the viveur is slowly only bringing in $50 a month at this time.

What was your worst day so far as an entrepreneur and what was your best day? What happened on those days?

My worst day was when I woke up about a month ago and wondered what I was thinking. I quit my 100k a year job as a police officer to pursue an online business. I had a relapse. Was I crazy? My best days are when I listen to The Science of Getting Rich on replay as I work on my businesses and continue to hack away at this thing called entrepreneurship.

What is one small “trick” or piece of advice that you have learned about reaching customers or making sales? Please be specific and provide something actionable for us.

I’ve learned so far that honest content is king. No one wants a spammer or someone that’s going to sell them crap. I wasted money on buying traffic for a click bank product once and I told myself never again. From now on I only promote products I believe in or have at least tried myself.

Give us two truths and a lie about yourself so we can get to know you better personally!

Truth – leaving my policing job was the hardest thing I’ve done in my life, I’ve been bitten by a german shepherd twice, so I decided to get a german shepherd to confront my fears. Lie – I’m a fearless warrior.

Have you considered quitting your job to start your own business? How would you prepare to make the leap?
