Step 1: Insert your security key

Your Amazon laptop is on its way. While you wait for it to arrive, you'll use an Amazon WorkSpace to start onboarding. A WorkSpace is a virtual Amazon computer that you’ll set up on your personal computer. This guide explains how to register your security key and set up your WorkSpace.

Introduction to security keys

Security keys help keep Amazon’s data safe. You’ll use your security key to connect to internal services and the Amazon virtual private network (VPN). There are several types of security keys at Amazon, but they all have the same features.

To begin, plug either of your security keys into a USB port on your personal computer. You might need to use 1 of the adapters that you received. (You only need to register 1 of your security keys. The second key is a backup.)

IMPORTANT: If you’re registering a gold and black key that looks like this:

Carefully insert this key with the pinhole facing out. If you insert this key backwards or sideways, it might be impossible to remove. You’ll see a green light when this security key is inserted correctly.
