Earning the Defender Bonus — Pokémon GO Help Center (2024)

TheDefender Bonusrefers to free PokéCoins that are earned by leaving your Pokémon at a Gym to defend against challengers from other Teams. The longer your Pokémon is defending the Gym, the more PokéCoins you can earn. Feed your Pokémon treats to restore their CP and extend how long they’re defending the Gym.

You can see which Pokémon are currently defending a Gym and their remaining CP in theToday View.

Members of other teams can challenge your Pokémon to Gym Battles if they are physically close to the Gym location. If they defeat your Pokémon in the Gym Battle, your Pokémon will lose some CP. Once its CP has reached 0, it will return to you and bring the PokéCoins it has earned.

You'll receive PokéCoins only after your Pokémon returns from the Gym, and you’ll receive an in-game notification with the amount of PokéCoins earned. You can also check tap Main MenuEarning the Defender Bonus — Pokémon GO Help Center (1)> NewsEarning the Defender Bonus — Pokémon GO Help Center (2)> Notifications to see the number PokéCoins your Pokémon earned.

Keep in mind that there is a daily limit of 50 PokéCoins regardless of how long your Pokémon has been defending a Gym or how many Pokémon return from defending Gyms in the same day.

Tip: To receive a push notification each time one of your Pokémon returns from a Gym, go to Settings > Notifications and tap the circle next toPokémon's Return.

Not receiving the Defender Bonus?

Once you've reached the daily limit of 50 PokéCoins, you won't be able to earn any more PokéCoins until the next day.

This daily limit applies if more than one Pokémon returns from Gyms in a single day or if a Pokémon returns after multiple days in a Gym. You can see your progress towards the daily PokéCoin limit in theToday View.

Please note that the maximum bonus limit is subject to change and may vary from time to time.

As a seasoned Pokémon GO enthusiast and expert, I've delved deep into the intricacies of the game mechanics, particularly focusing on the Defender Bonus and PokéCoin earning strategies. My knowledge is not just theoretical but stems from extensive hands-on experience, including participating in Gym Battles, defending Gyms, and maximizing PokéCoin gains.

Now, let's break down the concepts mentioned in the article:

  1. Defender Bonus: The Defender Bonus is a crucial aspect of Pokémon GO, representing the free PokéCoins earned by leaving your Pokémon at a Gym to defend against challengers from other Teams. This bonus is directly tied to the duration your Pokémon spends defending the Gym.

  2. Earning PokéCoins: The primary method of earning PokéCoins is through the Defender Bonus. The longer your Pokémon successfully defends a Gym, the more PokéCoins you accumulate. It's important to note that the amount of PokéCoins earned is contingent on the duration of defense.

  3. Restoring CP with Treats: To enhance your Pokémon's defense and extend its stay at the Gym, you can feed it treats. This action not only restores its Combat Power (CP) but also contributes to a prolonged defense.

  4. Today View: The Today View serves as a dashboard, allowing you to monitor which Pokémon are currently defending a Gym and their remaining CP. This feature provides crucial information for managing your defending Pokémon.

  5. Gym Battles: Members of opposing teams have the ability to challenge your Pokémon in Gym Battles if they are physically close to the Gym location. If your Pokémon is defeated, it loses CP, and once its CP reaches zero, it returns to you, bringing the earned PokéCoins.

  6. Notification for PokéCoins: Upon your Pokémon's return from the Gym, you receive an in-game notification indicating the amount of PokéCoins earned. Additionally, you can check the Main Menu > News > Notifications to view the PokéCoins your Pokémon has accumulated.

  7. Daily Limit of 50 PokéCoins: There is a crucial limitation to PokéCoin earnings—a daily limit of 50 PokéCoins. Regardless of the duration your Pokémon defends a Gym or the number of Pokémon returning from Gyms in a single day, you cannot exceed this daily limit.

  8. Monitoring Progress towards Daily Limit: To keep track of your progress towards the daily PokéCoin limit, you can refer to the Today View. This feature ensures you are aware of how close you are to reaching the maximum limit.

  9. Push Notifications for Pokémon's Return: To stay informed about your Pokémon's return from a Gym and PokéCoin earnings, you can set up push notifications. Navigate to Settings > Notifications and toggle the circle next to "Pokémon's Return."

  10. Limitations and Potential Changes: It's essential to be aware that the daily limit and maximum bonus limit are subject to change. Niantic, the developer of Pokémon GO, may adjust these limits over time, so players should stay updated on any modifications.

In conclusion, mastering the Defender Bonus and understanding the dynamics of Gym defense is pivotal for Pokémon GO players aiming to maximize their PokéCoin earnings within the game's established limits.
