First it takes practice, if it were that easy everyone would be doing it.
The seller has problems too...
They have to cancel that auction.
Even if it's "for a friend" they're taking a risk of getting caught.
Other than that I follow the auction for a bit, with practice usually one or two quick glances and I know right then if it's something I even want to bid on. Not all auctions are worth bidding on, no matter what is being auctioned. There is a flavor to it all, learn it, then learn to bid mostly on those you can win.
After that, snipe.
Any serious ebay bidder snipes, maybe not all but just putting on a stern face does not a serious bidder make.
So maybe if you're not sniping you're not a serious bidder.
