FAQs

What does basic flight mean? ›

Basic economy class is a travel class offered by a number of airlines. The class has superseded economy class as the cheapest airfare option for passengers and generally comes with more restrictions when compared to standard economy fares.

When did Delta introduce basic economy? ›

Delta Airlines introduced basic economy in 2012, with United and American following by 2017. The rationale was simple; they didn't want to lose sales and loyal customers to ultra-low-cost carriers like Allegiant, Spirit, and Frontier.

Am I guaranteed a seat with basic economy? ›

If you choose to book a basic economy ticket, you have to accept a random seat assignment (even if it's the middle seat) and be absolutely sure you don't need to cancel or change your flight. You'll also give up earning miles for the trip.

Can you bring a carry-on with Delta Basic? ›

Each passenger flying with Delta can bring 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item free of charge (such as a purse, laptop bag or item of similar size that will fit underneath the seat in front of you).

Can basic economy bring a carry-on? ›

For most trips you can only bring one personal item when you're flying in Basic Economy. You can't bring a carry-on bag unless you're flying to South America, across the Atlantic or across the Pacific. All other bags have to be checked.

Do you get a free checked bag with Delta? ›

Delta allows free carry-ons for all flights, including on basic economy. Checked bag fees depend on a bunch of factors, but for most domestic flights Delta charges $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second. There are many ways to offset these fees, including co-branded credit cards.

What is the difference between Delta Basic and economy? ›

Basic Economy tickets are the most restrictive ticket option Delta has — there are no changes allowed on these trips under any circ*mstance. Main Cabin tickets now have no change fee where you can change your ticket's destination, routing, or more for the cost of any fare difference.

What is the difference between basic and standard flights? ›

Basic economy tickets are ineligible for refunds and don't include seat selection. Economy Plus features standard economy seats with extra legroom. Standard economy includes seat selection and a free carry-on. All three economy classes charge for checked bags on domestic flights.

What is the difference between main and basic flights? ›

There is no difference between the actual seats in main cabin and basic economy on almost any airline. The difference between these fares is noticed outside of the seat – when you board, what you're allowed to bring on board, and what you can change before your flight.

Is basic the same as economy? ›

Although there is no difference in seats and legroom between main cabin and basic cabin fares (both are essentially economy seats), the difference is in the policies, such as how much luggage you can check in and bring on board and whether you can change or cancel your ticket without incurring penalties.
