  • Write the following to a *.reg file

    ----

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pem]
    @="CERFile"
    "Content Type"="application/x-x509-ca-cert"
    ----

Double click on it and then you have .pem linked to Crypto Shell extension.

  • It's not recommended to change the default file type.

  • Hi,

Like Chilam said, if you associate other files with it, it's invalid. Why did you want that?

There is no executable file, it's just an DLL fileto be as a shell extension. This type is for certificate file default.

  • I want to open PEM (.pem extension) encoded certificates with Crypto shell extensions. Actually PEM files are opened with XCA software and I want to change it.

  • Hi,

It couldn't be opened with Crypto Shell Extension. Even through you associate with this type, it would display error like this:

Default program - Crypto Shell Extensions (14)

You could consider to convert it to valid other type file, like .cer. it would be like this:

Default program - Crypto Shell Extensions (15)

This is the real answer here. Works like a charm. FWIW, the icon of the PEM file may not look the same as other cert files (e.g. *.crt) until a reboot, but if you right click the file -> open with -> Confirm/Keep Crypto Shell Extension as associated program and select always open with, Windows will then refresh the icon immediately.
