As a crypto enthusiast, it just seemed natural to mine crypto on all devices that I have. Having spent a bomb on my MacBook (~$4000 SGD), this MacBook is the most expensive laptop that I have ever bought.
Furthermore, the MacBook has been taunted as a device with a 10-core CPU and 16 core GPU. Both of which seemed to give an impression that the device is very capable with performance exceeding traditional devices.
Performance is exceptional, only if it’s targeting the ARMS architecture
How to Mine
There are only a few ways to mine crypto on the Macbook compared to a Window’s device. You will need to get your digital wallet ready, (Metamask for me), which is kind of the basic for crypto.
Head over to easyMineable to download the mining software
Head over to unminable
Paste your wallet address to 2 platforms and you can start mining
However, this is only mining at 3.3MHA. This is super slow compared to a normal graphics card. Furthermore, heat will be generated by the machine that will cause wear and tear to the MacBook battery as well. As such, I really do not recommend it.
Running it for 2 hour
Running this for 2 hours has earned me approximately 0.00230941 Matic. This would approximate to about 0.02771292 a day, 10.1152158 a year. This translate to $25 a year (Matic is 2.5 usd as of this writing) My ROI is definitely not worth it.
However, this mining process is not exactly causing my laptop to slow down. This means that I could potentially mine while using my laptop, that is, if I can handle the heat and sound generated.
Conclusion
It’s not worth mining on the Macbook yet. The profits that you make do not cover the MacBook and you will end up with a spoiled Macbook which you could sell for a higher price.
Instead, I would rather take part in proof-of-stake projects like CRO or dots rather than proof-of-work. Also, depositing them into hodlnauts is also a good idea. (~12.7% apy per year for stable coins)
