Check your canister: Expired bear spray may not fire properly (2024)

BOZEMAN, Mont — If you’re adventuring in Montana's outdoors you’ll need to be equipped to handle bear encounters. It's why Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials are urging everyone to check their bear spray to see if it still works.

After all, it's an effective tool in stopping an attack.

“Nothing is 100% perfect, but it's a really good tool, and you could still get hurt, but it'll probably really reduce the chances of your injury in that situation,” FWP wildlife stewardship outreach specialist Danielle Oyler said.

A study shows bear spray effectively changed the animal’s unwanted behavior more than 90% of the time. In 72 incidents involving 175 people, only three people were harmed, none seriously.

“People should be carrying bear spray anytime they are in bear country. Bears can be found in a lot of places in Montana; black bears in most of the state, and grizzly bears could be seen anywhere west of Billings,” Oyler said.

However, before going into bear country you’ll need to make sure your spray works properly, and that starts with checking the expiration date.

“The propellant, what actually gets the very spray out of the can, is actually able to slowly leak out of the seal of the can over time. So while it may still feel heavy, it may not spray properly after that expiration date,” Oyler said.

Typically, cans last three to five years. Once expired, Oyler suggests emptying the can by spraying it somewhere away from people. Then wrap it up in a plastic bag and throw it away.

“It's really important that you have the cans empty so that you don't put anyone in waste management who is at risk of having that bear spray can rupture,” Oyler said.

If you’re going out for an adventure, keep your bear spray at a place easily accessible. It should be fired downward when a bear is within 25 feet.

“The way it works is by spraying the fineness of that capsaicin in the air, and it irritates the mucous membranes, the lungs, the nose, the eyes of the animal and gives you a distraction so that you can get out of there,” Oyler said.
