Metamask is one of the most widely used non-custodial wallets, as it supports a large number of cryptocurrencies and blockchain networks.

However, you are unable to hold native SOL, as Metamask does not support the Solana network.

Here’s what you need to know, and how you can add SOL to your Metamask wallet.

You are unable to add or send native SOL to your Metamask wallet, as the Solana network is not compatible with your Metamask wallet. Instead, you will be able to add SOL that exists on a different network, such as wrapped SOL that is on the BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, Polygon and Avalanche networks.

When you obtain your deposit address from your Metamask wallet, it will start with the prefix ‘0x‘.

The address that you are copying is the same, regardless of whether you are using the Ethereum Mainnet or the Binance Smart Chain. However, if you are using the Harmony ONE network, you will need to convert it to a Harmony-compatible address.

There are some platforms like Binance which allow you to withdraw Solana using multiple networks.

If you copy your Metamask address to Binance, it will automatically remove the native Solana network from the possible networks you can use to withdraw SOL.

Instead, you are only able to withdraw to EVM-compatible networks, such as the BNB Smart Chain.

As such, you will be unable to send native SOL to Metamask via the Solana network. This is because Solana is not an EVM-compatible network.

If you do so, there is a risk that your funds may be lost forever!

You can find out more about this in my video here:

What are the alternatives to sending SOL to Metamask?

To send SOL to your Metamask wallet, you will need to send SOL that exists on different networks, such as wrapped SOL that exists on Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche and the BNB Smart Chain.

These are also known as wrapped versions of SOL, and they are similar to how there are wrapped versions of BTC that you can send to your Metamask wallet.

You can send wrapped SOL to Metamask on different networks, including:

  • BNB Smart Chain
  • Ethereum
  • Polygon
  • Avalanche

If you have not added any of these networks to your Metamask wallet, here is how you can do so:

All of these versions of SOL will represent SOL on other networks apart from the native SOL network.

How do I add the SOL token to my Metamask wallet?

You are unable to add the native SOL token to your Metamask wallet, as the Solana network is not EVM-compatible. Instead, you are able to add wrapped SOL to Metamask on EVM-compatible networks like BNB Smart Chain or Ethereum.

Wrapped tokens are a representation of a token on another blockchain. In theory, they should be able to be converted 1:1 with the native asset (in this case, SOL).

To add wrapped SOL, here are the steps you’ll need to do:

  • Select the appropriate network on Metamask
  • Copy the contract address for wrapped SOL specific to that network
  • Go to the ‘Import Custom Token’ field and paste the contract address

You can view the available contract addresses specific to each network on CoinMarketCap.

Can I send SOL from my Phantom Wallet to Metamask?

You are unable to send SOL directly from your Phantom Wallet to Metamask. This is because Phantom only holds native SOL, and Metamask cannot receive native SOL as it is not EVM-compatible.

To solve this, you will need to use a bridge to transfer SOL from the Solana network to an EVM-compatible network.

Metamask only supports EVM-compatible networks, and the deposit address will normally start with “0x“.

In contrast, your Phantom Wallet will only support the native Solana network. As a result, the deposit address will not have the prefix “0x”.

If you send SOL directly from Phantom to Metamask, your funds may be lost!

Instead, you will need to use a blockchain bridge, such as Portal Bridge.

You can connect your Phantom Wallet, and select the bridging process from Solana to Ethereum.

Apart from Ethereum, you can bridge SOL to other EVM-compatible networks, such as AVAX, BNB Smart Chain and Polygon.

You may need to pay a fee when you are bridging from Phantom to Metamask.

Can I send SOL from Metamask to Phantom or Solflare?

You are unable to send SOL directly from Metamask to Phantom or Solflare. This is because Phantom and Solflare only hold native SOL, and the SOL that you are sending from Metamask is a wrapped version and not the native version of SOL.

Similar to the above, you are unable to send SOL directly from Metamask to Phantom or Solflare.

You can use the Portal Bridge to transfer SOL that you have on an EVM-compatible network to native SOL.

You may need to pay a gas fee for this bridging process, which can be quite expensive!

What alternatives can I use to store native SOL?

To store native SOL, you can send it to other wallets that support the Solana network, including:

  • Trust Wallet
  • Phantom Wallet
  • Exodus
  • Atomic Wallet

Alternatively, you can use the Ledger Nano to store SOL with the security of a hardware wallet.

Conclusion

You are unable to send or add native SOL to your Metamask wallet, because Metamask does not support the Solana network.

However, it is possible to send other versions of SOL that exist on the BNB Smart Chain, ERC20, Polygon or Avalanche networks!

After adding and receiving your tokens to your Metamask wallet, you can consider using decentralised exchange (DEX) aggregators, including:

Since both platforms are DeFi aggregators, they will ensure that you will get the best rates for any swaps that you make!

If you’re looking to generate tax reports for your crypto trades, you can consider using Koinly, which allows you to track your transactions from 350+ exchanges and 50+ crypto wallets.
