ARE BYRNA PISTOLS AND RIFLES CONSIDERED TO BE FIREARMS BY THE BUREAU OF ALCOHOL TOBACCO AND FIREARMS? No. Byrna Less-Lethal Self-Defense Pistols and Rifles are powered by compressed CO2 cartridges, just like a paintball or airsoft gun.

Byrna guns are legal in most states in the US and are estimated to be more than 90% effective in stopping an assailant.

However, the Byrna HD is not a firearm, and is more akin to a BB, airsoft, or paintball gun, albeit more powerful. Those such devices are legal for felons to possess in California, and Federally.

It is recommended to swap out punctured CO2 cartridges and leave an un-punctured cartridge inside the Byrna HD to avoid any compressed air loss.

The Byrna SD is a more compact and portable variant of Byrna HD as it is mainly made for concealing. On the other side, Byrna HD is a bigger, sturdier weapon for ensuring more effective self-defense. Moreover, Byrna SD is easier to operate than Byrna HD due to the improvements made to it.

Byrna Kinetic Projectiles Byrna Kinetic Projectiles are a hard, solid (reusable) plastic projectiles that can be used for self-defense and practice.

The Byrna SD is one of the most effective less-lethal self-defense weapons on market today. The Byrna SD is powered by CO2 and can fire pepper projectiles at up to 300 feet per second. The Byrna SD has an effective range of up to 60 feet allowing you to disable a potential threat from a safe distance.

The CO2 with Oil cartridge does all the work while you fire. CAPACITY: Each CO2 cartridge will be good for 15-20 rounds.

The Byrna LE Launcher is the most powerful launcher in Byrna's lineup (60% more power than the SD and EP Launchers).
